Maybe youre hosting the holidays or treating your family on a Tuesday night. Making sure you prepare your ham properly is the key to a successful meal. Spiral Sliced Ham comes to you fully cooked, so the prep is simple. Heres a quickvideo that covers all the essentials youll need to serve the perfect ham to your family.
Preheat oven to 275F. Remove all packaging materials and place ham in a shallow roasting pan. Quarter and half hams should be cooked flat/face-side down. Whole hams should be cooked fat-side up. Cover pan tightly with aluminum foil.
Bake at 275F for approximately 15 minutes per pound, until heated through (see chart). Do not overcook! Remove ham from oven and let stand 20 to 30 minutes before serving. If glazing is desired, see additional glazing instructions.
And to make sure your ham is baked perfectly, this handy chart will help with cooking times based on ham size and weight. Its important that you dont overheat it in the oven or your ham could end up dry instead of juicy. So follow along with the video, double check your chart, and serve up a tasty and delicious spiral sliced ham every time.
Glazing Instructions (for Smithfield Smoked Hams sold with glaze packet):1. Remove ham from oven. Remove foil and turn ham on its side. CAUTION: Ham will be hot. Please use utensils to turn ham.2. Place refrigerated glaze packet under warm tap water 1 minute or until glaze is softened. Cut off corner of packet and apply glaze evenly over ham surface. Allow to sit 5 to 10 minutes while glaze melts into ham.3. If desired, glazed ham may be heated. Remove ham from oven 10 minutes before end of warming time and follow instructions for glazing ham. Heat glazed ham, uncovered, 10 to 15 minutes in 275F oven.
Our popular sweet cure hams, know as "City Hams", use a shorter cure time and have a milder flavor than our traditional Country Hams. Since these hams are pre-cooked and have a deliciously mellow flavor, they're perfect for those who enjoy a rich ham flavor without the bolder salt curing process. Choose from our spiral cut honey cured or brown sugar cured, glazed or non-glazed for a spiral ham that suits you best. And for your convenience, each generously portioned ham is fully-cooked and spiral cut for effortless entertaining and serving. A spiral ham from Smithfield is a good choice for holiday celebrations or any other time of the year.
Spiral sliced hams are a great invention. Conveniently pre-sliced, these hams are easy to carve and serve. Perfect for Easter and Christmas dinners, they usually come with their own glaze packet, but making the glaze at home greatly improves the end result. Our recipe for the glaze perfectly complements the salty-sweet flavor of the ham. Taste is important but so often, foods like spiral, pre-sliced hams so easily get dried out when you reheat them. This method, however, will keep your ham succulent and moist.
Serve this ham with scalloped potatoes, steamed green beans, dinner rolls, or other tasty sides appropriate for a ham dinner. If you happen to have leftovers, that just means you've got new ways to approach leftover ham recipes. Keep leftovers in the fridge for up to 3 days or portion the ham into freezer containers and freeze for up to 6 months.
"The ham was delicious with the honey, brown sugar, and mustard glaze. It was a very easy preparation, and the cooking directions were spot on. The sugar mixture can burn if left in too long, so check after 10 to 15 minutes. Leftovers are great, too!" Diana Rattray
Place the ham in a heavy roasting pan, cut side down. Cover the ham snugly with heavy duty foil. Roast the ham for 10 to 14 minutes per pound. For a 6-pound ham, that's about60 to 84 minutes. When tested with a reliable meat thermometer at the thickest of the meat, the ham should read at least 145 F, the minimum for safe pork consumption.
Return theham to a 400 F oven and roast for another 10 to 20 minutes, or until the ham is fully glazed and a thick and sticky coating is visible. Remove from the oven and place onto a serving plate. Let rest for 5 minutes. Serve and enjoy!
When it comes to ham, there are many complementary side dishes to choose from. Mashed sweet potatoes or a sweet potato casserole are excellent choices and a nice alternative to mashed potatoes. Pineapple goes well with ham, too. Choose a pineapple stuffing, pineapple salad, or sliced canned pineapple. Roasted Brussels sprouts, creamed spinach, and green beans all go well with ham.
A pre-cooked ham such as a spiral ham is absolutely safe to eat without reheating it. In fact, many people enjoy it this way, served cold or at room temperature, or sliced for hearty sandwiches, as part of a fancy grilled cheese, stuffed into a biscuit, or eaten with a fried egg.
To the uninitiated, ham is ham. It's pink and salty, usually with sweet and smoky overtones as well, and it goes well with just about any side dishes you care to name. A closer look shows that this is a remarkable simplification. There are hundreds of kinds of city hams, country hams, spiral-cut hams and imported dry hams, all with their own distinct characteristics. Spiral-cut hams are among the easiest to understand, being just a city ham that's pre-sliced for convenience.
At bottom, ham is the cured hind leg of a hog. Hams sold in the United States are most offen cured in a wet brine of salt, sugar and spices, and are sometimes referred to as "city hams." They're usually sold cooked and ready to eat. Country hams are cured in a dry salt mixture, then hung to air-dry in a carefully controlled setting. This gives them a dense texture and concentrated flavor, much like imported dry hams such as prosciutto and jamon serrano. They're sold raw and can be shaved thinly like prosciutto or cooked. They must be soaked and simmered long enough to remove the excess salt before they're cooked.
City hams are sold in several versions, all of which have their merits. Full hams are available, but at an average of 15 pounds they're too large for the typical modern family. They're usually cut into a butt and a shank portion, with the butt yielding larger slices but the shank having denser, more flavorful meat. Some are boneless, while others retain their bones. Spiral-cut hams are made at the processing plant by slicing a bone-in city ham in one continuous spiral, leaving the meat on the bone in its original shape. Rather than carving the ham by hand, the cook must only cut the meat from the bone to have perfect, consistent slices.
Spiral-cut hams vary widely in quality. Often hams from small, regional producers are superior to their mass-market counterparts. Asking your butcher for advice can be helpful, as can checking the ham's label, which often contains useful information. Hams that are naturally smoked have better flavor than those with smoke flavor added. Checking the ham's water content is important; the best hams contain no added water, and their labels simply describe them as "ham." "Ham with natural juices" is the next-highest grade; a spiral-cut ham labeled as "ham and water" is usually inferior in flavor and texture.
Spiral-cut hams are fully cooked, so they only require reheating before they're served. You can cut the slices away for sandwiches or breakfast ham or bake the entire ham for a festive meal. If you're preparing the whole ham, it's best to bake it at temperatures of 300 degrees Fahrenheit or lower to keep it from drying out. Bake it in a covered pan or a roasting bag to help retain moisture. If you prefer your hams glazed, uncover the ham or cut open the bag for the last 15 minutes of cooking. Turn your oven up to 425 F while you're glazing the ham, then return the ham to the oven until the glaze is caramelized.

To heat or glaze your Cook's Bone-In Spiral Sliced Ham prior to serving, we recommend the following instructions for best results. IMPORTANT: Don't overheat your ham (unless you prefer it as dry as the Sahara, of course). Cook's Bone-In Spiral Sliced Hams are fully cooked and ready-to-eat, or you may heat them using the following directions.
Preheat oven to 275F. Remove all packaging materials and place ham face down directly into baking dish or roasting pan. (Place whole ham on its side.) Cover tightly with lid, foil or place in cooking bag and heat at 275F for approximately 12-15 minutes per pound.
Remove ham from oven 10 minutes before end of heating time recommended above. Open prepared glaze packet (see tips below) and brush half of the contents on surface of the ham. If ham was placed in cooking bag, carefully cut bag open and pull away from ham, then apply glaze. Heat glazed ham uncovered for 10 minutes at 275F. Remove ham from oven. Heat remaining glaze in microwave safe dish for 40 seconds and serve with ham.
Glaze may be applied directly from packet. We recommend that the refrigerated glaze packet be warmed slightly in one of the following ways to help soften the contents prior to application: Microwave: place packet in small microwave safe dish and warm on high for 40 seconds. Warm Water: hold glaze packet under warm tap water for 40 seconds or until glaze is softened.

Since 1927, our team at Burgers' Smokehouse has been perfecting our methods of making the most delicious country cured & hickory-smoked hams. We still use many of the same methods and recipes we used then, today. Our Hickory Smoked Spiral Sliced Ham is a delicious centerpiece to any dinner and pairs well with your favorite side dish. If you are looking for additional side dish inspiration, we invite you to check out our recipe section or ready to heat side dish options.
When the centerpiece is an easy entre like this gorgeously marbled ham, your Easter menu is just a few sides short of an amazing feast. The ham is glazed with honey, ginger, orange zest, and cloves and couldn't be simpler to make or more delicious.
Preheat oven to 325F with a rack in lower third. Stir together honey, orange zest and juice, ginger, cloves, and 1/2 teaspoon pepper. Wrap ham, fat-cap-side up, tightly in parchment-lined foil. Place on a rimmed baking sheet or in a small roasting pan.
Bake 1 hour. Unwrap, leaving foil under ham to catch juices. Brush with some of the glaze; continue baking, uncovered, basting with more glaze every 15 minutes, until heated through, 45 minutes to 1 hour more. Brush with remaining glaze; let cool slightly. Serve warm.
Lots of us will have a glazed spiral ham on the table this Easter (certainly more of us than will have rabbit). And as thin slices of pink meat lift easily off the bone with just the touch of a meat fork, lots of us will be wondering about the history of spiral-sliced hamspecifically, how, oh how, did this most magical of holiday meats come to be?
To start, we give you the spiral-slicing machine, patented in 1952 by Harry J. Hoenselaar. Hoenselaar found a clever way to mechanically navigate the ham bone, the bane of meat carvers through the centuries.
The spiral-slicing machine works by skewering a ham (or any other meat) vertically on spikes at top and bottom. A spring-loaded slicing blade cuts through the meat, stopping when it meets resistance from the bone. As the ham rotates, it gradually lowers on the spikes, creating the spiral. Hard to visualize? Watch this video:
The same Harry J. Hoenselaar who invented the machine, by the way, also founded HoneyBaked Ham in Michigan in 1957, which grew into a national chain over the years. Originally, HoneyBaked stores were the only places where you could get a spiral-sliced ham. In 1981, Hoenselaars patent expired, and now you can buy spiral-cut hams in grocery stores everywhere. Considering how expensive the branded HoneyBaked hams are, many will.
Spiral hams are cut from a pigs leg and are cooked, brined, and sliced as per the above-outlined helix technique before being shipped to stores. You never actually need to cook a spiral ham, just bake them enough to warm them up and get the natural juices often touted on the label flowing; too long in the oven and spiral hams will turn dry and chewy, no matter how much water has been added or brine injected.
Theyre often high in sodium, thanks to the aforementioned brine, and either hickory smoked or have smoke flavor addedas well as nitrites, nitrates, and phosphates, though you can find all-natural specimens at a higher price point.
Depending on the size of your family/crowd, you can opt for either half hams or whole hams, and select either shank ends, which taper to a skinnier point, or butt ends, which are more uniformly round. The butt is a bit leaner, if thats what you like. In any case, you can also get spiral hams bone-in, which tends to lead to better flavor, or for the easiest carving ever, grab a boneless spiral-sliced ham.
Some spiral hams come pre-glazed, but many include the glaze in a little bag within the foil or netting around the ham. In the latter case, if you dont want to use that probably-syrupy-sweet glaze, you can easily whip up your ownwith ingredients like honey, maple syrup, or orange marmalade instead of high-fructose corn syrup.
Historical opinion on Chowhound has favored the hams from Trader Joes and Safeway, though it was mixed on Costcos Kirkland spiral-cut. Cooks Illustrated has done tastings of supermarket spiral-sliced hams (link is available to subscribers only); it found that bone-in hams that didnt add water to the meat were the best, and recommended the Cooks Spiral Sliced Hickory Smoked Bone-In Honey Ham, which had a nice balance of smoke and salt and genuine ham flavor. The Carando Honey-Cured Spiral Sliced Ham was called too wet (ick), and the Hillshire Farm Bone-In Brown Sugar Cured Ham (Spiral-Sliced Ham) was spongy and cottony.
Of course, supermarket hams generally wont have the amazing, crackly glaze of a real HoneyBaked. But Internet gossip and recipes claim that said HoneyBaked glaze is simply sugar and spices, caramelized into crackle with a blowtorch like the surface of crme brle. Anyone tried it?
