When this was done, I looked sparkly from all the garnet sand dust on my face. Consider wearing a bandanna, especially if you have any respiratory issues. Actually, you really want to wear a respirator, to avoid silicosis. Use goggles if you have them. Swimming goggles (that seal over your eyes) or a snorkel might work best.To construct the sandblaster, attach the hose to the air gun, and drop the other end into a bucket of garnet sand or other abrasive. Any even-sized abrasive should work - we grabbed this out of a pile of abrasive meant for the water jet.Once everything is assembled, proceed to sandblast!My jeans are indeed whiter.

The setup is a normal air gun, with a hose at a second attachment. This sucks in sand at a constant rate, via Bernoulli's Principle, like an aspiration setup in a chemistry class.Find a bucket of sand for the hose to rest in. Find some good method to keep the hose submerged in sand, like duct-taping the hose to the side of the bucket so that it's always pointed downwards.We just tipped the bucket so the sand was in a huge pile on one side, and stuck the hose into that. Even so, every now and then the hose stops sucking sand, which sucks.Hook the gun up to any compressor hose.

I would like to say "Good 'structable' : but... There and mentions of safety and goggles, respirators etc. But stop being foolish; you really need to know that sand blasting is bad for your health. If you use silica, silicosissilicosis and fibrosisfibrosis are possible results. Even cleaning yourself off or others withcompressor air compressor air is NEVER a good idea. Oil lubricated compressors have the added hazard of oil mist. A full set of rules can be found in the link. Then you must also consider the material being removed b the blasting. The title is a bit misleading; it says "Make your own sand blaster, And how to use it" Clearly you did not make your sandblaster, it looks like it came from Harbour Freight. You used it, but not safely, and could possibly mislead others. Thanks to ironsmiter for the tip on baking soda, and ditto wasp's sentiments.

chill its not like any one would use this every day the exposure wouldent be enough every one would just use it for one quik project and yes it is hiughly recomended to wear a reperator at the least a dust mask and googles are near manditory cuz if one high speed peice of sand hits you eye it could scratch your cornea and blur ur sight for quite a while

Cool instruct-able! I work with sandblasting all the time but have never tried it on jeans. That's a decent little siphon sandblaster you got there. I have made my own for a pressure pot blaster so I have variable trigger flow which is hard to do. I use it to etch glass. Look at the sandblaster instructions for what CFM and PSIit needs, then take a guess at what percentage of the time you'll actually be sandblasting. Maybe 50%? Compressors have three main numbers: *Maximum PSI(Pounds per Square Inch) air pressure *CFM(Cubic Feet per Minute), how much air it will deliver at a given PSI(pressure). Often there will be a couple of CFMnumbers; the higher the PSI, the lower the CFMbecause it takes longer to pump up a higher pressure. *Tank volume And then there's the quality and lifetime of the compressor. If you're doing a few pairs of jeans, a small, cheap compressor is fine. For larger jobs and sandblasters, you'll want more CFM (requires a bigger motor). If the compressor is too small (not enough CFM), you can still use it. You'll be able to blast for a while until the pressure drops, then have to stop and wait while the compressor chugs away building the pressure back up. Tank volume will be important here. Also look at air-hose sizing; too small of a hose will drop too much pressure. If you're doing a lot of work, you'll want higher CFMand a compressor that will last. Also you can balance the cost of a better sandblaster (may be more efficient) against compressor size. E.g. for air tools, the Harbor Freight tools are cheap, but waste a lot of the air. OK for a few small jobs, but if you're doing a serious amount of work go for a better brand. Keep the compressor (and other machinery) away from the sandblasting area -- 'breathing' the abrasive dust will kill it! AND you. Your lungs won't work very well if they're full of fine sand! Wear goggles, gloves, long sleeves, spend $30-$40 on a respirator mask with P100 filters (stops 100% of particulates). A hood is nice to keep the sand out of your hair. Keep an eye on where the dust is going, too. Don't let your buddies stand around and breathe the dust!

I wouldn't buy a compressor just for this either, but then, this isn't the only thing one can do with a compressor. nail guns, airbrushing, broom, almost as useful as duct tape. and your still really saving money, as you wouldn't have to buy a blaster AND a compressor. Also you can find hobby sized compressors (powerful enough to power a nail gun) for around $80-$100 at your local hardware mega-store.

Interesting... however, I used to shop around to see if I could buy some sandblasting equipment to customize some of my jeans like that... when I went around in hardware shops and ask for a compressor for sandblasting, they told me which bare basic compressor I needed as an absolute minimum... and the thing was about as big as a red space rocket, and cost around 1200$; the person told me how many PSIs were needed and all... and only such huge compressors had the good pressure. So now I'm confused as to how this sand is supposed to be shoot with enough force without a beast compressor!

This is an advanced project requiring heavy use of a welder and plasma cutter. The essential element of a the machine is its particle projection system. The most common type is a turbine using centrifugal force to project a stream of tiny abrasive particles entering at the center of the turbine. For example, did you know most sand blasting machines can be used for scale removal, rust removal, deflashing, stripping, peening, and surface preparation for coating?

Not every surface finishing project will require the same quantity of media in a sand blasting machines air stream. Be sure to research the quantity of media required or desired before every sand blasting project. Too much media can actually decrease the impact of the blasting, rather than increase it.

If youre using a portable sand blaster with a hose, be cognizant of the angle at which you hold the hose. Blasting perpendicular to your surface will cause the incoming meia in the air stream to collide with the media thats ricocheting off the projects surface upon impact. This will lessen the impact of the air stream, which can increase the time it takes to finish surfacing. Blasting at an angle will also improve the strip rate when removing coating or other impurities off the surface.

Increase the longevity of your sand blaster (and ensure it stays in proper working order) by cleaning it regularly. If you have a sand blasting cabinet, make sure that leftover debris is removed regularly. Be sure to replace the media regularly as it wears down. Its also important to regularly replace any air inlet filters.

The nozzle of your blast hose will also need to be regularly replaced. When your nozzles are intact, your sand blaster is effective and operates faster. Check your nozzles daily to determine if its time to swap out with a new. The interior area in nozzles are prone to wearing out due to the friction of sand passing through. The good news is that this deterioration should be visible to the naked eye, and nozzles are relatively easy and inexpensive to replace.

The only thing you need asides this is a pressure washer, which is considerably cheaper (and in my opinion far more useful to have around the house) than the alternative option which is an air compressor. If you dont own a pressure washer already, then I highly recommend looking at either my electric pressure washer guide or if you want some serious power my gas pressure washer guide.

These sandblasters produce a lot of dust, which is incredibly dangerous to inhale. If you use a dry sandblaster, you need to make sure that nobody comes near without a mask, which is rather tricky to do if you are working from home.

Unlike the dry sandblasters, water-based sandblasting is mostly dust-free, thats not to say you shouldnt wear a respirator mask, but as the particles of sand fall down with the water droplets. Its a safe option if you want to work on a project in your own backyard. Wet sandblasting is safe and eco-friendly.

Dealing with plastic or thin metal can be tricky, as these surfaces tend to be heat sensitive. Using a dry sandblaster, these surfaces can get damaged by heat. Whether thats warping, bending, or discoloration.

Fortunately, with a wet sandblaster, as you blast the surface with the sand and water mix from your pressure washer, the water cools the surface keeping the temperature under control. When you wet sandblast, the surface will never overheat.

This sandblasting kit is made with relatively cheap materials, but dont let that put you off. This a cracking bit of equipment if you are only going to use it infrequently i.e. preparing a fence for new paint.

This sandblasting kit includes a 10 foot-long sand hose, so you dont have to worry about a loss of suction, a plastic sand wand which like the above sandblasting kit, has been designed to suck up the sand from your sand bucket optimally. The sandblasting nozzle housing is made of a thick, sturdy plastic and hoses a replaceable ceramic nozzle.

With this kit, you get what you pay for, so dont expect to get much life out of the nozzle of the sandblaster. After a few projects and itll start to fail, at least that was my experience, though it was perfect for dealing with that single project before having to get a new kit for the next.

Why is this kit going to fail more frequently than the ones above? Well, unlike the previous kits which came with a ceramic nozzle tip, this comes with a brass nozzle tip and it just gets worn out much quicker.

The hose itself is attached to the sand wand and the spray nozzle by two clamps, this is an excellent feature as you can easily detach the hose from the sandwand and nozzle allowing you to dry the hose just in case any water comes down your sand hose.

This makes more than strong enough to handle all your domestic sandblasting projects. You get a very long PVC hose, this comes in at 18 foot-long. This is great, this length is in that perfect zone, ensuring that you get a steady sand flow, while that extra distance keeps your sand bucket well out of the water of water kickback, which reduces the chances of the sand clumping and blocking the feed.

Ive no doubt that there have been moments in your life when a sandblasting kit would have really saved the day, perhaps youve even spent hundreds of dollars on getting professionals in to do the sandblasting for you, thinking that its just not possible to do it yourself, well you can.

Sandblasting is exactly how it sounds, Its a powerful abrasive, you are literally blasting sand at a surface, this sand strips paint, rust, well anything that is the outermost layer is taken off of the surface.

Basically, if youve ever sanded something by hand or used a power sander such as an orbital sander, this is just a much more powerful option, thats quick and effective. No need to use sandpaper or a chemical paint stripper.

Typically to do this at home, youd need either a pneumatic tool such as an air compressor or a pressure washer. Apart from these machines, youll also need a sandblasting kit and a bag/bucket of sand or another sanding media.

So based on your circumstances and the needs of your project should dictate which one you go for, as I had a pressure washer already and I didnt own an air compressor, the decision was relatively easy.

For example, if the surface is made out of wood, then you probably want to choose dry sandblasting (I didnt..), even if the wood has been treated to handle moisture. This is because wood tends to blister or bend from exposure to excess water.

However, if you are sandblasting plastic, then wet sandblasting is your best choice because as plastics get hot, which they would from the friction of dry sandblasting, they tend to bend and change shape. However, the water from the pressure washer is a very effective way to prevent the surface from overheating.

Finally, if you are working with metal or masonry, then either method is suitable, though if you are using metal, make sure to dry the surface properly and apply an anti-rusting product if its the type of metal thats vulnerable to corrosion.

So asides from the reduced cleaning, theres also a health and safety aspect. If you are working in a populated area, I.e., near schools, office buildings or near your family home, you dont really want a dust cloud floating around.

Unfortunately with dry sandblasting thats precisely what youll get, sandblasting with an air compressor will result in a dust cloud, so make sure to wear the appropriate protective equipment, dont forget your lungs or your eyes.

With dry sandblasting, As you shoot sand onto the surface you are cleaning, every piece of sand shatters into multiple particles upon impact, as you are using air to propel them, these particles simply fly off into the air, leaving you and your project enveloped in a lot of dust.

However, when you use pressurized water to blast sand onto the surface you are cleaning, there isnt anywhere near as much dust. The water droplets catch the shattered sand particles, preventing them from wandering off. In fact, the added weight of the water helps make the particles fall to the floor immediately.

If you dont have a pressure washer or an air compressor and you are wondering which is a better choice, firstly what other jobs will you be doing? Will you need an air compressor for other tools? Or will you use a pressure washer more often?

Unless you are looking to purchase a commercial-grade pressure washer, air compressors are typically much more expensive than a water-based tool, you can use lower water pressure of around 1500 PSI for wet sandblasting, so those small, less powerful pressure washers can do the job.

This combination of water and sand quickly blasts these things away, leaving you with a clean and smoothed surface. Different materials can be used for wet water sandblasting and each one will provide a distinctive finish to the surface being cleaned.
