While cinnamon has many culinary uses, it may also be used to improve health due to its high level of antioxidants as well as its anti-inflammatory properties.[1] X Research source Some research still needs to be done in order to understand the full range of cinnamons benefits. However, whether you want to use it for health or simply for its taste, cinnamon oil can help you add more cinnamon to your daily life. Not only is cinnamon oil useful in food, but it can be used on your body for its supposed healing and antiseptic properties, as well as around the house for cleaning and insect management purposes. Simply steep fresh cinnamon in a carrier oil, and you will have a cinnamon-flavored additive ready for regular use.

To make cinnamon oil, start by finding a clean, glass jar with a rubber seal integrated into the lid. Then, wash the jar in warm water and soap, and sterilize it in a pot of boiling water for 3 minutes so you dont get any unwanted bacteria in your oil. Once it's cool enough to handle, pack as many cinnamon sticks as you can into the jar. Next, add olive or canola oil until the sticks are fully submerged. Finally, tightly seal up the jar and place it in a warm, dry area for 3 weeks so the cinnamon releases its flavors and nutrients into the oil. cinnamon powder: benefits, risks, and tips

cinnamon powder: benefits, risks, and tips

Ceylon cinnamon may sometimes be referred to as true cinnamon. But theres some debate about whether or not thats the case. Ceylon and Cassia are both cinnamon, but from different parts of the world and from slightly different types of trees.

Some smaller studies have shown that cinnamon does have an effect on blood glucose levels in those with type 2 diabetes. Interestingly, there seems to be a different effect based on the type of cinnamon used.

Cassia cinnamon has shown the most promise in controlling blood glucose, while the Ceylon species of cinnamon is just beginning to be studied. This may be partially because Ceylon is harder to come by than Cassia.

A smaller Chinese study published in the journal Nutrition Research found evidence of cinnamon lowering blood glucose levels in patients that took cinnamon supplements, in contrast to those who were given a placebo.

Cinnamon has been shown to reduce some of the bad effects of eating high-fat foods. This can help in an overall weight loss plan. Its effect on blood glucose levels can also help your body ultimately lose weight.

Its important to note that cinnamon alone will not lead to long-term weight loss. But it might be beneficial to add cinnamon to your healthy diet and exercise plan to help you reach your weight loss goal. One teaspoon of cinnamon does contain 1.6 grams of fiber, which can help you reach your daily fiber goal and increase a feeling of fullness at meals.

Ceylon and Cassia cinnamon both contain coumarin. When coumarin is consumed in extremely high doses, it may cause some dangerous side effects. Ceylon cinnamon contains far less coumarin than Cassia cinnamon.

As mentioned previously, cinnamon powder is commonly added to toast and baked into pastries, but there are numerous other delicious ways to incorporate cinnamon into your diet. Many ethnic cuisines including Indian, Mexican, Middle Eastern, and North African use cinnamon as a primary spice in savory dishes. Try the following recipes for ideas.

The next time youre fighting a cold, or just need something comforting to eat, try this unique spin on noodle soup. You can make a large batch and have it ready to heat up on days you dont feel like making dinner. Get the recipe.

how to dissolve cinnamon in coffee - 3 ways to spice things up

how to dissolve cinnamon in coffee - 3 ways to spice things up

Cinnamon is a great way to spice up your usual cup of coffee. But, dissolving grounds cinnamon into your coffee is one hell of a task, and you might just fail anyway. Not your fault, its just the way cinnamon works. Let me explain.

You cannot dissolve cinnamon in coffee, since it is an insoluble fiber and will not melt. But you can steep the cinnamon with the coffee grounds, and still obtain the cinnamon flavor, without the slimy sludge.

Do not add ground cinnamon to any brewing method that uses pressure and gravity, like espresso or drip filter or Moka pots. You can instead add a whole stick of cinnamon to your already brewed coffee to add flavor.

For example adding ground cinnamon to your espresso in the coffee cup will be a mistake, much like it would be with cocoa. This is because the cinnamon will expand and take up much of the water, leaving it not much room to go through your ground coffee.

Another alternative, if you cant add ground cinnamon to your ground coffee is to mix in the ground cinnamon with your cream before adding it to your coffee. This will make it mix in with the coffee better, since it wont all float at the top.

Another option is to sprinkle the ground cinnamon directly into the whipped cream, before you whip it. This way when you serve the drink with whipped cream, you wont have cinnamon just on the top, but all throughout the cream.

Do keep in mind that if you use this alternative, your coffee will no longer be a black coffee. If you want to keep it black then youre either left with mixing ground cinnamon directly into your coffee, or using this third option.

Finally, and this is the last option I could think of, you can keep some cinnamon sticks with your coffee beans. As you know, coffee absorbs smells, which means it will absorb the aroma of the cinnamon sticks.

When you end up grinding the coffee beans, you will end up with cinnamon-infused coffee. Some beans may take the aroma faster, some might not. Its up to you to play around with the proportions and how long you keep the cinnamon sticks in before you first grind the beans.

The crystals are made of completely different compounds, and they contain absolutely no fibers whatsoever. Whereas cinnamon, whether ground or sticks, are made up of just fibers. Imagine trying to dissolve some twigs.

Now, there is a difference between ground and stick cinnamon. Much like with coffee beans, the cinnamon sticks preserve the flavor better. This means that pre-ground cinnamon (like coffee) is going to lose its flavor much quicker than the full, stick form.

When you do add ground cinnamon to your drinks or foods, you wont really feel the texture since its pretty finely ground. But its not dissolving into your food or drink. If you were to grind it in a larger size (as in, not powder) youd notice it right away at the bottom of your cup.

The only problem is that brewed coffee wont permeate the cinnamon grounds completely. Much like you cant boil rice directly into milk to make a rice pudding. Its just too thick to do what youre asking it to do.

cinnamon drinks that are easy to make at home| well+good

cinnamon drinks that are easy to make at home| well+good

Here, Gabrielle McGrath, RD, who works as a registered dietitian for Lexi's Clean Kitchen, explains what makes cinnamon such a healthy win to keep stocked in your pantry. And you don't have to cook with the spice to reap its benefits; there's plenty of ways you can work it into your drinks, too. In addition to the health benefits of cinnamon, highlighted here are five cinnamon drinks you can easily make at home.

According to a study published in the journal Metabolism, regular consumption of cinnamon may help improve metabolism to support healthy weight management. The study found that cinnamaldehyde (a compound in cinnamon) can trigger fat cells to burn energy that they would typically store.

"Anti-inflammatory foods contain natural components called phytonutrients that may help protect against inflammation," McGrath says, adding that cinnamon's anti-inflammatory properties may help keep any chronic inflammation in check. "This is beneficial to heart health because inflammation may aid in the production of more plaques and promote blood clots which are the primary causes of heart attacks and strokes," she says.

"The antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties in cinnamon are what allows it to be such a powerful superfood to humans," McGrath says, explaining that antioxidants protect your body from oxidative damage caused by free radicals. "Free radicals are what cause damage to parts of cells such as proteins, DNA, and cell membranes leading to things like premature aging and numerous chronic diseases. The anti-inflammatory properties prevent or reduce low-grade chronic inflammation which can lead to numerous health issues and serious diseases."

Even though it tastes sweet, cinnamon doesn't spike blood sugar; in fact, it keeps it steady. This means that consuming it won't mess with energy levels or mood. But McGrath emphasizes that cinnamon alone won't steady blood sugar levels if you're still consuming other unhealthy foods. "Instead, it is an important tool in your health toolbox to prevent these unpleasant side effects or diseases," she says.

When cells communicate better (thanks to antioxidants), ithelps the immune system, McGrath says. "The immune system depends on fast and precise communication between cells for it to perform at its best. If there is any free radical damage to cell communication, it will result in a weakened immune system," she says. Adding a dash of cinnamon to your immunity shot will not only make it easier to knock back, it ups the benefits, too.

While it may look and taste like dessert, this cinnamon latte is actually low in sugar. Besides the starring spice, it uses vanilla extract and just a touch of maple syrup. Blend them into your favorite nut milk and coffee (or espresso, if you have an espresso machine at home) and you have yourself a fancy coffee-based cinnamon drink.

If you're more of a tea drinker, this cinnamon drink just might become your new favorite. It also has turmeric, another powerful inflammation fighter. Together, they make the perfect blend of savory and sweet, without being too overwhelming in either direction.

This smoothie is so decadent that it works just as well for dessert as it does for breakfast. Besides the cinnamon, all you need are three other ingredients to make it: nut milk, banana, peanut butter, and honey. In addition to the cinnamon working to reduce inflammation, the peanut butter gives good protein and the banana helps replenish potassium, which can be lost through sweating, making this smoothie a great workout recovery drink, too.

If you want to consume cinnamon for the benefit of boosting your immune system, this shot is a good way to do it. Also in the small-but-strong serving is turmeric, lemon juice, ginger, and black pepper. It's potent, but effective.

This cinnamon hot chocolate tastes like warm gingerbread fresh from the oven, only in liquid form. The secret to getting the taste just right is blending the cinnamon with a few other key spices: ginger, all spice, cardamom, cloves, and vanilla. Oh, and cocoa of coursecan't forget the chocolate!

make your own supplements | powder city

make your own supplements | powder city

There are multiple methods to capping your own blends; however, many of them are shoddy and produce inferior results. An excellent post on reddit provides a detailed explanation on the materials you need and the best method to get the most accurate nootropic blend.

Each capsule can hold 490mg of picamilon or 715mg of glutamine. Assuming you want each capsule to contain a 100mg dose of picamilon, you will need to use the following equation to determine how much glutamine you will need per cap.

This method is much more exact than the simpler method of merely subtracting 100mg of Glutamine to allow for the 100mg of Picamilon. This is because volume and weight are two different beasts. Just because two products have the same weight does not mean they will have the same volume, as you can see here. 146mg of Glutamine is equal to 100mg of Picamilon volumetrically.

Now that you have the appropriate amount of supplement powders, you need to mix them in a way that will get you the most accurate distribution. No one wants to painstakingly measure out each individual dose of both supplements per cap. To do this you will need to use the geometric dilution method. It goes like this:

Now you are ready to make your capsules! By taking the time to accurately measure and blend your powders, you can ensure that you are getting an accurate dosage. In this case, 100mg of picamilon and 569mg of Glutamine.

This may seem like a lot of work when you could just use your active compound to fill your capsules. Some people simply do not like half empty capsules. However, there is a major reason why fillers are used, and that is dosing accuracy.

When you use a capsule filling machine, you simply pour the calculated, pre-mixed powder onto the tray and then scrape it across the surface into the capsule holes. It is nearly impossible to get the same exact amount into each capsule. As a result some will be fuller than others and your doses will be inaccurate.

However, if all you need to do is completely fill the capsule with a premixed blend then you will not need to worry about inaccurate doses. Of course, you could always measure out every single dose individually, but that will take up quite a bit of your time.

Some people are perfectly fine picking a non-reactive substance like baking soda and leaving it at that. However, if you do not want to spend all that time measuring and mixing your blend just to have it be partially filled with an inert substance, you can use smart fillers.

What this means is you can pick a filler that is non-reactive with your main compound but that has benefits of its own. While baking soda has its uses, there are plenty of other options out there. So what can you use instead?

The example above used glutamine. However, the individual did not pick it at random. Glutamine is a precursor to GABA and Picamilon is hydrolyzed into GABA once consumed, which makes these two supplements synergistic. The released GABA can then activate GABA receptors to produce an anxiolytic response [1]. Picamilon is primarily taken for its mood boosting and anti-anxiety benefits; glutamine can further enhance these effects.

Another option is creatine. Not many are aware of this, but creatine has nootropic benefits. While most people take it as a preworkout supplement, it can also be used as a neuroprotectant as well as a way to mitigate brain fog that accompanies many nootropics [2]. Creatine supplements can also improve fluid intelligence [3].

This next suggestion, whey protein, is most often included in pre- and post-workout blends. However, that does not mean protein powder is without cognitive benefits. One study by The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition found that whey protein can improve cognition in individuals susceptible to stress [4].

Citric acid can also be used as a filler when encapsulating your blends. While it is commonly used in cosmetics, citric acid also has positive implications for physiological stress and fatigue. One a double-blind, placebo-controlled, 3-way crossover study compared citric acid against l-carnitine and a placebo to see which, if any, could improve levels of salivary chromogranin A, a physiological stress marker. Citric acid lowered levels of salivary chromogranin A as well as subjective feeling of fatigue where as l-carnitine did not [9]. It also provides antioxidant benefits.

If you dont have a capping machine or dont have the time to properly mix your supplements, there are a few alternative solutions. Many people choose to cap their supplements because of the bitter taste, so the main goal is to mitigate this issue.

One alternative is to mask the bad flavor with a good one. Many people will cut their bitter nootropics with stevia or citric acid to improve the taste. Another option is parachuting. This method is fairly simple. All you need is rice paper and your desired supplement. You pour your dose onto a small square of rice paper and then grab all of the corners and twist until it looks like a little upside down parachute. You can read more about these methods here.

45 minute cinnamon rolls {from scratch} - cooking classy

45 minute cinnamon rolls {from scratch} - cooking classy

The fastest cinnamon rolls youll ever make! Made from scratch and they can be ready in 45 minutes! Ooey gooey, tender buttery cinnamon finish with a sweet and simple cream cheese icing. These are sure to satisfy!

Too often I get a huge craving for a fresh, made from scratch, warm out of the oven cinnamon roll but so often I dont want to wait the 3 4 hours it takes to prepare them with all those tedious and lengthy rise times. Yes, I love a good yeast based cinnamon roll, but is the yeast absolutelynecessary? Well, I decided to find out for myself.

Recently, Ive been reading through the The Quick Recipe from the Editors of Cook Illustrated Magazine and came upon their recipe for Fastest Cinnamon Buns. I knew I had to try it for a number of reasons. First offIm yet to be let down by Cooks Illustrated.

If you are looking for a cookbook that you will likely love and cherish for life, Id recommend any of the Cooks Illustrated cookbook collections. They are fabulous. And second Im a cinnamon roll addict so if it can be done in anywhere under the usual 3 hours, then Im in.

Normally when I try someone elses recipe I like to make quite a few of my own changes, but this time around I mostly just made minor changes. The changes I made from their recipe were using a little more cinnamon as well as nutmeg instead of cloves (I just like it better).

I used light-brown sugar instead of dark-brown sugar (because I rarely have dark brown on hand), I used the buttermilksubstituteI listed because I was out of buttermilk, also I used salted butter instead of unsalted (Im a salted butter baker) and I replaced their glaze recipe with my own because I thought it could use a little butter.

Im telling you, this recipe is amazing! Not only is it the fastest batch of cinnamon rolls Ive ever made but they also tasted spectacular. The texture was slightly different from that of a yeast based cinnamon roll. It didnt have the same stretch you get from using yeast, but other than that not a whole lot of difference.

I should also mention Cooks illustrated listed the total time to be 55 minutes, which included 5 minutes of cooling in that time. I say they were being generous with the time theyallotted I had these prepared and out of the oven in just under 45 minutes. Just be sure to make the glaze while they are baking to save time. Enjoy!

Delicious! I was intimidated by the thought of making homemade cinnamon rolls but this recipe was fairly easy. I ran out of granulated sugar so i left sugar out of the dry ingredients and substituted with maple syrup (little less than 1/4 cup) in the cinnamon mix. I couldnt taste the maple syrup :( but the rolls still tasted amazing.

This is okay for when you dont have yeast. I would half the cinnamon sugar mixture. Its WAY too much and I think it also kept the dough from baking properly. It was very dense and doughy. I probably could have kept it in a few minutes longer but then I would have ended up with burnt edges. I MIGHT try it again if we were desperate but it needs some tweaks.

So Terrible, that almost made me cry of sheer frustration. I kept adding flour passing the 3 cups mark, the dough was never manageable (still I went on to make them) enough said: all that flour changed taste, texture.. they turned out dense >.< It was a waste of resources. There's a consolation though, I'm not the only one whom the recipe didn't work out :/ Still I'm glad it was great for other people.

I have found that when baking rolls it is better to only add half of the liquid up front, when following the recipe, then add a tablespoonfull at a time until I get my desired consistency. Just gotta remember. Scones made without yeast makes a very sticky dough. It will stick to your hands no matter what. Dusting your hands with flour will only help a tiny bit.

For the recipe, mix dry ingredients for the dough first. Then add the butter. Only add enough milk to make the dough stick together and pliable for rolling out into a sheet. (Due to having lived in deserts and on the coast I do this for most recipes as humidity in the environment greatly impacts recipes.) The recipe is not bad but definitely not a roll rolls use yeast. This is a very solid cinnamon biscuit recipe for those lacking time for 2 rising or a real cinnamon roll recipe.
