Excess free lime, for example, results in undesirable effects such as volume expansion, increased setting time or reduced strength. But finding suppliers who can consistently deliver alternative fuel with the requisite heat value, moisture content, chloride content, and the required particle size that is a real challenge.

One of the problems in the US specifically is that the waste management industry does not typically consider the cement industry as a possible end user of municipal waste. In order to do so, there would need to be a system in place that not only processes the waste into consistent, suitable fuels, but also transports, stores and delivers those fuels. Instead, roughly 220 million t of MSW (municipal solid waste) is landfilled each year across 1500 MSW landfills in the US, with a further ~25 million t going to waste-to-energy plants. The system lacks the synergy that you see in, for example, Europe where cofiring is common and highly successful. In addition to the lack of cooperation between industries, there are also legal barriers: current regulations discourage the use of secondary materials as fuels.

As such, cement producers looking to cut fossil fuels use have two choices: they can either find a reliable alternative fuels supplier or they can source the feedstock and make the fuel themselves. As Mike highlighted, finding a reliable supplier able to meet the required specifications can be really challenging, to the point that in some parts of the country it feels impossible. And on the other side, if cement producers decide to process their own fuel, there are a lot of regulatory hoops to jump through but with the advantage of total control over their fuel characteristics.

The infrastructure costs involved in processing fuel are also significant and sometimes come with a limited opportunity for payback. Having made the investment and gone through the permitting process, cement producers could find that a few years down the line their equipment is obsolete because the feedstock has changed or even disappeared completely. And that is something that is likely to become more of a challenge as the industries producing the feedstock for these fuels do more to reduce their own waste. Its very difficult for cement plants to commit to burning alternative fuels when there is so much uncertainty.

Liberia: HeidelbergCement has commissioned a new 0.5Mt/yr, US$14m cement mill at its cement grinding plant in Monrovia, Liberia. The German cement producer operates in Liberia through a subsidiary, Cemenco. It is the only cement producer in the country.

"The construction of the new cement mill in Liberia is in line with our strategy of modernising and expanding clinker and cement capacities in emerging markets," said Dr Bernd Scheifele, Chairman of the Managing Board of HeidelbergCement. "In Ghana, we recently increased the cement grinding capacity at our Tema cement plant and are currently building a new cement mill in Takoradi. Together with our existing plants in this region, the new mill in Liberia strengthens our coastal network in West Africa."

Investment in the new cement grinding facility in Liberia includes a two-chambered 65t/hr ball mill with high-efficiency separator, filter, fan and flow meter. The power supply of the new cement-grinding mill is provided through a 5.7MW generator plant on a rental basis.

HeidelbergCement is currently conducting investment projects in sub-Saharan Africa amounting to almost US$400m. They include expansion projects of cement capacity of about 3Mt and of clinker capacity of 1.5Mt.

Under Executive Order No. 46, titled 'Re-Instituting the Suspension of the Protective Tariff on Cement,' the Liberian government has repealed a US$2 protective tariff per 50kg bag of Portland cement imposed under the Revenue Code of Liberia, tariff No. 25.23. The mandate added that the need still exists to encourage local industries to supply cement to the general public at reasonable prices.

Liberia currently has one cement grinding plant, the Liberia Cement Corporation, a subsidiary of HeidelbergCement which employs 63 people. In 2012 Nigerian cement producer Dangote announced plants to build a US$35m plant in the country.

Speaking during the signing ceremony held in Monrovia at the head office of the National Port Authority (NPA) on Bushrod Island, the president of Dangote, Alhija Aliko Dangote, disclosed that his company will employ hundreds of Liberians and other nationals. Operation is expected to commence by the end of April 2012. Signing on behalf of the Liberian Government, the Managing Director of the NPA, Madam Matilda Wokie Parker lauded the initiatives being applied by the company to invest the economy.

With an 8.1-metre grinding table and six grinding rollers powered by an 11.6-megawatt gearbox, the FLSmidth OK 81-6 Mill has milled its first cement at Shah Cements Muktarpur Plant, Munshiganj, Bangladesh.

Shah Cement Industries Ltd. of the Abul Khair Group is one of Bangladeshs largest cement producers. The FLSmidth vertical roller mill (VRM) was chosen to produce a full range of cement types at the Muktarpur Plant. Driven by two 5.8 MW FLSmidth MAAG Max Drive gear systems, the impressive mill is the biggest VRM ever to be installed in a cement plant in terms of dimension, operating capacity and installed power.

The worlds largest VRM was successfully put into operations in September 2018, and plant management at Shah Cement is extremely impressed with its outstanding performance. In just a few weeks, it has achieved a highly satisfactory production capacity with low energy consumption.

The supporting equipment included FLSmidth Pfister weigh feeders, FLSmidth Airtech process bag filters, process fans and auxiliary equipment from raw material hopper discharge to process bag filter discharge.
