However, if youre new to the aggregate processing industry, you probably have a lot of questions about rock crushers. As foundational material handling equipment in all plants, crushers need to coordinate seamlessly with screens, conveyor systems, and washing equipment.
It is common to use multiple crusher types within a project and set them up as stations in a circuit format to perform the necessary material reduction work. In many cases, primary, secondary, and tertiary, and quaternary stations are installed to reduce the rock to the desired size, shape, and consistency.
For instance, if the final size of your product only needs to be between 4 inches and 6 inches, a primary jaw or impact crusher can accomplish your goals. However, you will likely require a much finer product, and that means incorporating up to threeor even fourstations with a variety of crusher types.
As the first stage in a crushing circuit following extraction from a mine site, (or in the case of recycled asphalt production, delivery to the RAP processing plant via truck transport), primary crushing reduces material to a size and shape that can be handled by the secondary crusher.
Typically, the minimum setting on most primary crushers will be about 4 to 6 inches, as noted above. Compression-style jaw, cone, impact crushers, and gyratory crushers are most often appropriate as primary crushing equipment types, though there can be overlap between primary and secondary crushers as far as suitable types.
In secondary crushing, reduction ratios become an essential consideration. Knowing just how fine you need your final output to be, along with the feed requirements of your tertiary or final reduction crushing station, will help you determine how much reduction needs to take place within this stage.
Cone crushers are often placed within the secondary crushing station because they are versatile in terms of feed, closed side setting, speed, and throw. With cone crushers, though, it is essential to operate them at consistent choked settings to keep productivity up.
The goal of the tertiary (third), quaternary (fourth) or final reduction stage of the crushing process is to size and shape rock or other material into a marketable product. Again, there may be overlap between stages in terms of which crusher styles work best.
Sandstone, limestone, gravel, and granite are arguably the most common aggregates used in the construction industry today, but these rocks have very different hardness and abrasiveness characteristics.
The answer might be three to four if youre talking about setting up stations in a complete rock crushing plant. Those are the primary, secondary, and tertiary/quaternary/final reduction rock crushers, which we covered above.
Of course, there are also different styles of rock crushers. Compression-style jaw and cone crushers, for example, fit into the various stations in a crushing circuit (depending on factors like the sizes, varieties, and hardness of the rock you need to crush, as well as the necessary output).
The number of crusher types in terms of style and configuration can be more challenging to quantify, as there are lots of ways to customize rock crushers. However, youll find four basic designscone, jaw, gyratory, and impact crushersoperating within many crushing plants.
Jaw crushers are also known as rock breakers and are used to break up larger, harder materials into more manageable pieces. They tend to do well with many different types of materials and dont display as much wear and tear as impact-style rock crushers. They also produce minimal fine materials and dust, though the finished product with this type of rock crusher almost always requires secondary crushing.

Cone crushers can accept medium-hard to very hard and abrasive feeds that might be dry or wet, though not sticky (whereas gyratory crushers are better at handling softer, dryer feeds). Their output will be a relatively cubical product, with a reduction ratio of about 6-to-1 through 4-to-1.
Impact-style crushers include VSIs, as well as horizontal shaft impactors (HSIs), and are best used with less abrasive rock types, like limestone. These types of machines break apart material by the impacting forces of certain wear parts known as blow bars and impact plates or toggles.
Some operations also use impact-style crushers after they have already used a different type of rock crusher that produces a more elongated stone. This helps further shape the crushed material into a finer consistency with a more cubical nature.
Impact crushers tend to be less expensive than compression crushers (aka cone and jaw crushers, which we already covered) and have a higher reduction ratio. They can also break sedimentary deposit-type rockslimestone and similaralong natural lines, which rounds off sharp angles and weak edges. This can produce a result that is more sand-like in nature.
Drawbacks of impact crushers include their tendency to produce an excess of fine materials if used with softer rocks. Impact rock crushers can also require frequent part changes and can create a large amount of dust that can be an issue on some worksites.
Stationary plants have long been preferred because they feature a higher capacity and efficiency and lower production costs with easier maintenance. They also have historically featured a lower energy cost if you have on-site electricity, and no additional equipment is needed to move them from place to place.
Its true that portable material handling equipment already offers unmatched production flexibility. For instance, if you need to move your crushing plant more than once a year to multiple job sites, you are likely better off investing in portable equipment.
These self-contained plants are better suited to smaller projects and can be moved from project to project as necessary. They are often still not quite as efficient and have less capacity than stationary plants, but they can be more cost-effective in the long run if you have multiple projects in different areas.

We are announcing that Rockcrusher Farm will be closed through the Summer months and plan to reopen in October for our 8th Anniversary. There are several projects under way. We will be hosting the Full Gas Sprint Enduro in August as planned, but there will be no Open Ride Days scheduled. We simply need to focus on the tasks and race event planning at hand and reopen with a fresh coat of paint in October.
[06/04/20] We have just confirmed that due to WESS pulling out of the TKO Race due to International Travel Restrictions with the US, Graham Jarvis will not be traveling to the US in August or foreseeable future. We have confirmed with his input and direction that the 2 Day Training Session and Dual Sport Ride Scheduled for August 7-9 is immediately canceled. We will start processing refunds this afternoon and contacting all registered customers. This is a horrible disappointment for all and we had almost sold out with only 4 spots remaining. Looking forward to putting all this chaos behind us and having Graham Jarvis back with us as soon as possible.

5 Points MX Park offers a motocross track and practice facility for all skill levels. The park is open to motorcycles, dirt bikes, and 4-wheelers daily from 9 am to dark. Grooming of the track usually takes place on Friday afternoons or Saturday mornings, so its a good idea to call before you head out. The Badin Lake OHV Trail Complex is the only OHV trail system in the Piedmont Region of North Carolina. It offers 16 miles of trails for dirt bikes, ATVs, UTVs, side-by-sides, and four-wheel-drive vehicles. A permit is required and should be displayed. The trail system has six trailheads and is open 24 hours a day from April 1 to December 15.
The Cotton Place Trailhead located on the eastern end of the Daniel Trail is a tough section, so prepare beforehand. There are orange diamond markers for designated 2-way motorized trails. For night rides, make sure to have working headlights and tail lights.
Black Swamp OHV Trail offers 8 miles of exciting terrain. The mostly flat mud trails weave through pine and scrub oak forest. During wet weather, the area can get too muddy and may cause closure. Its best to call before heading out.
The trail is open year-round, and you will need to secure a trail riding permit. Only motorcycles, dirt bikes, four-wheelers, UTVs & SXS with a maximum width of 50 inches are permitted on the trail. Blackjack motocross park has a main track that is designed for both novice and expert riders. There is also a large peewee track separate from the main track. The mostly sand and mulch trail is open on Fridays from noon to dark and during weekends. It only allows motorcycles, dirt bikes, and four-wheelers.
Brown Mountain OHV Trail has 34 miles of marked and groomed trails for all skill levels and is known for its seasonal mud pits. There are signs at the head of each section. Make sure to get a trail pass before riding.
This 1,700-acre park offers over 100 miles of one-way only trails for dirt bikes. Located in the scenic Brushy Mountains of North Carolina, the trails weave through heavily wooded areas and offer challenges for all skill levels. Both ATV and motorcycle trails are available, and theres also a dirt bike and sport quad motocross track.
The park opens on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays. Members are also able to ride on Wednesdays and Thursdays by appointment. Primitive camping is available in designated areas and adjoining sites. Busco Beach and ATV Park offer 5 miles of trails for dirt bikes, four-wheelers, UTV, and SXS. Its a recreational riding facility with a beach along its outer perimeter. The marked trails are lightly maintained with many small jumps, steep hills, water crossings, berms, sand and gravel pits, and a few large jumps.
The 2,600-acre Carolina Adventure World is reputed to be The Southeast Largest ATV, UTV, and Dirt Bike Riding Park. With over 100 miles of riding trails, there is fun and adventure for riders of all skill levels. There are 10 miles of dedicated dirt bike trails and horseback riding.

Dirt World Off-Road Motorsports offers over 5 miles of trail with a motocross track for all skill levels, an outdoor track, a youth track, two kid tracks, and a woods course. Its a favorite family-friendly riding destination open Saturdays and Sundays, from 10 am to 3 pm.
A permit is not required to ride the trails. The trails are generally designated for motorcycles and dirt bikes, but there are some areas where four-wheelers, UTV, and SXS are permitted. The trail is mostly loose dirt with many small jumps and berms and some large jumps.

The 230-acre North Carolina Motorsports Park offers 9 miles of trail for riders of all skill levels. From the 1-mile beginner loop to the adrenaline-pumping The Big Hill, bikers will surely have a grand time here. Theres a fast 2-track, a tight single-track, sudden changes in elevation, creek crossings, rocky hills coupled with widely varying terrain. The park is among the top go-to places for dirt bike riders to practice and hone their skills between races.
The more than 600-acre Outback Motorsports ATV & MX Park offers multiple tracks perfect for dirt bikes. The trails weave through wooded areas and along a riverbank. Riders can test their skills as they maneuver their way through ponds, a mud bog, several sand pits, and a drag strip. The main track is 1.5 miles long. There is also a flat/round track and a peewee track for beginners. The mostly loose-dirt trails are marked and lightly maintained. There are areas for camping with both primitive and RV hook-ups.
The park is open from 9 am to dusk, and you do not need a permit to ride the trails. Call first and check out their websitebefore heading out for detailed visitor information, including fees and passes.
The 100-acre Shelby MX Express offers 3 miles of marked trails for riders of all skill levels. Its a family-oriented facility, and it has a vet track and kids track and plenty of open areas for practice and beginner-friendly trails. The 1.2 miles of motocross track has challenging obstacles and jumps, which provide excellent practice for experienced riders to improve their lap times.
Uwharrie Trails offer 20 miles of mostly dusty trails winding through wooded areas. They have some mud, rocks, steep hills, and water crossings. The 20-mile route is primarily for 4x4s and four-wheelers, but dirt bikes, motorcycles, UTV, and SXS are permitted. You need an OHV Trail Pass to ride the trails, which open from April 1- December 15. Night riding is permitted provided that vehicles have working headlights and brake lights.
There is free primitive camping at Art Lilley Campground, which also has direct access to the trail. Full-service campgrounds are available in nearby Arrowhead Campground and Badin Lake Campground, but the downside is these campgrounds dont have direct off-road access, so there is a need to haul the machines to and from the staging areas.
The Wayehutta OHV Trail has 28 miles of marked trails for dirt bikes. Its a family-oriented trail system with areas great for beginners and kids. The routes take riders through several bridge crossings, mounds of dirt, dense forest vegetation, and a scenic waterfall. Some parts of the trails are very rocky, with a few steep hills and some berms.
The main staging area is only for day-use, and camping is not allowed in the park. The trail system is open from April 1- December 15 from dawn to dusk. No permit is required to ride the trails, but passes must be purchased in advance.
