Diamond drilling has revolutionized the mining industry and directly resulted in the discovery of many minable orebodies that would otherwise have gone untapped. Before the introduction of mainstream diamond drilling, mining was still primarily dependent on finding outcrops of rock, with little information available about ore concentrations below the surface. Diamond drilling allows for the removal of solid cylinders of rock (core) from deep within the earth.

The term diamond core drilling comes from the diamond bit drill used during this process. This drill bit is made up of a group of small, industrial-grade diamonds set into a metallic, soft matrix. As the ground is drilled this matrix will wear away and expose more diamonds.

The diamond bit is then attached to a drill rod which measures to about 10 feet in length. More sections of the pipe can be attached to the top of the drill rod, allowing greater depths to be drilled as needed. Therefore, the number of rods attached to the top of the drill rod will determine the depth that can be drilled. Within the drill rod, a core tube is attached to a cable by a latching mechanism. The core tube is lifted to the surface using the cable to allow for the removal of the solid core.

There are two primary types of diamond drilling, which include rotary drilling and wireline drilling. Rotary drilling is used primarily for borehole drilling, whereas wireline drilling is used for solid core sampling.

To extract the core, the drill rod rotates the diamond bit and spins it into the ground. As the drill bit bores through the rock, solid rock is taken into the circular opening at the end of the bit, into the core tube, and can then be recovered at the surface as it piles up. Once the core is recovered at the surface it is broken along natural fractures and stored in core trays to await analysis. A standard core tray can hold around 10 feet of core.

To keep the drill moving through the rock smoothly, the drill must be well lubricated with water in order to prevent overheating or sticking. For optimum core extraction, the driller must listen to the drill to evaluate subsurface conditions. To ensure that drilling remains efficient, the rotation speed, pressure and water circulation must be strictly monitored. Sometimes when drilling in highly fractured zones, overheating can occur due to a stuck bit. This issue is usually counteracted by the injection of mud or sawdust to plug fractures in the rock.

Diamond core finds its primary function in the exploration mining sector. It is usually one of the last stages of exploration, during which the orebody is delineated in three dimensions. This will determine whether the prospect is economically viable. Using a diamond drill rig, long vertical sections of core can be extracted from deep in the ground which can then be analyzed at the surface by geologists.

The core can then be analyzed using a wide range of petrologic, structural, and mineralogical techniques to determine whether the potential mining site is economically viable. Extracted core is first washed and macroscopic features are logged by an exploration geologist. The core is then cut and representative samples are sent for chemical analysis.

An increasing amount of exploratory wells are being drilled into by exploration companies around the world. As energy demand continues to rise, the number of these wells is also expected to increase. Currently, the most prevalent geographies in which diamond core drilling takes place includes various locations in North America, Asia Pacific, the Middle East, and Europe.

Mine sites always have inherent safety risks and diamond drilling rigs are no exception. While operating a diamond drill rig, the appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) must be worn at all times, of which typically includes steel toe cap boots, hearing protectors, gloves and goggles.

Furthermore, as diamond drilling is primarily an exploration technique, the conditions in which it is carried out are often harsh and so due diligence needs to be taken whilst in these environments. For example, if working in desert conditions, enough water and shelter must be provided for the drillers to prevent dehydration and heatstroke.

Diamond miners who work in small-scale mining panning or digging for diamonds produce about 15% of the worlds diamonds. But their wages do not reflect the value of their work. An estimated one million diamond diggers in Africa earn less than a dollar a day. This unlivable wage is below the extreme poverty line. As a result, hundreds of thousands of miners lack basic necessities such as running water and sanitation. Hunger, illiteracy, and infant mortality are commonplace. Even within developing countries, diamond mining communities are often the most impoverished.

How is it that diamond miners can be some of the poorest people on the planet? Small-scale diamond mining is usually an unregulated activity. Labor standards and minimum wage laws, if they exist, are rarely enforced, subjecting miners to the whims of cruel and exploitative employers. Many diamond miners work independently,There are one million diamond diggers in Africa earning less than a dollar a day. but these miners tend to be unlicensed and lack access to global markets, limiting their bargaining power. In most cases, diamond diggers have little choice but to sell their diamonds to middle-men at below market prices.

Besides being grossly underpaid, many diamond miners work in extremely dangerous conditions. Small-scale diamond mining is often conducted without training or expertise. Miners may lack safety equipment and the proper tools. They can easily die or be injured in landslides, mine collapses, and other accidents.

Diamond mining also contributes to public health problems. The sex trade thrives in many diamond mining towns, leading to the spread of HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases. Environmental devastation resulting from diamond mining is another cause of disease. In Sierra Leone, miners have littered the landscape with thousands of abandoned mining pits. These pits fill with stagnant rainwater, become infested with mosquitoes, and serve as breeding grounds for malaria.

Because children are considered an easy source of cheap labor, they are regularly employed in the diamond mining industry. In some areas of Africa, children make up more than a small part of the workforce. One survey of diamond miners in the Lunda Norte province of Angola found that 46% of miners were between the ages of 5 and 16.

For children trapped in the diamond mines, life is full of hardship. Children work long days, often six or seven days a week. Compared with adults, they are even more vulnerable to injuries and accidents. Physically challenging tasks such as digging with heavy shovels or carrying bags of gravel can leave them hurt or in pain. Because of their small size, children also may be asked to perform the most dangerous activities such as entering narrow mineshafts or descending into pits where landsides may claim their lives.

Manychild miners do not attend school. As adults, these children often will have little choice but to continue working as miners. Child labor thereby condemns many children to a lifetime in the mines, robbing them as well as their countries of a brighter future. At Brilliant Earth, we believe that every child deserves an education. As part of our non-profit initiatives, we have helped to fund a program that removes children from diamond mines and pays for their schooling.

Governments earn significant revenues from the diamond industry, both through taxation and profit-sharing arrangements. But they often fail to re-invest these funds in local communities. In Angola, the government receives about $150 million per year in diamond revenues. But conditions near major diamond mining projects are appalling. Public schools, water supply systems, and health clinics are non-existent. Many roads have not been repaired since Angola first won independence in 1975.

Corruption, incompetence, and weak political systems all help explain why governments fail to invest their diamond revenues productively. For instance, in Zimbabwe, President Robert Mugabe uses diamond revenues to keep the military loyal and to prop up his corrupt authoritarian regime. AlthoughZimbabwe has some of the richest diamond fields in the world, only a trickle of diamond revenue is available for economic development.Local residents displaced to make way for diamond mininghave even gone hungry and homeless.

A different path is possible. Botswana is an example of a country that has managed its natural resources effectively. Aided by diamond revenues, Botswana has instituted universal primary education and built health facilities and roads. Natural Diamond Council (NDC) The Natural Diamond Council, formerly the Diamond Producers Association (DPA), formed in May 2015 by seven leading diamond companies, exists to maintain and enhance consumer demand for, and confidence in diamonds, and to maintain a strong focus on sustainability. Its focus is broad, from employee health and safety and working conditions to partnership with local communities, supply chain integrity, environmental management, financial transparency, and product disclosure.

In 2019, to shed light on the reality of modern diamond mining, the DPA (now the NDC) commissioned independent research on its Members, who comprise nearly all (75%) of the worlds diamond production. Members include ALROSA, Dominion Diamond Mines, De Beers Group, Lucara Diamond, Petra Diamonds, Rio Tinto, and Murowa Diamonds. Diamonds have been considered the quintessential precious gems since the age of antiquity unadulterated expressions of the crystal form, prized both for their luminous clarity and all-but-unbreakable strength. This innate fascination with carbon diamonds is partially behind the rise of THCA diamonds, the latest craze in cannabis extraction and the reason your dispensarys concentrate shelf looks like a jewelry store display case.

Steinfarm, a Seattle-based photographer who specializes in photographingTHCA diamonds, says that the similarities between the two types of diamonds was central to his transition into professional cannabis photography. Before becoming a cannabis photographer, he spent eight years working as a commercial product photographer and the majority of his clientele were in the jewelry business. The most common item he was paid to photograph? Diamond rings.

As it turns out, there arent that many aesthetic differences between carbon diamonds and cannabis diamonds, and as soon as he started photographing them, Steinfarm realized he already knew what he was doing.

I was shooting diamond rings, and I started seeing these [crystalized] concentrates come out, he says. I was looking for an edge into the industry and the diamonds are kind of where it hit off, cause honestly, theyre really similar to earth diamonds.

The diamonds are made from THCA, which is the acidic compound in the plant thatbecomes THCwhen it is exposed to heat. Crystalline THCA has been widely available for several years, but even at purity levels as high as 97 percent, it tends to have a powdery appearance to the naked eye. Then,Guild Extractsin California pioneered the use of molecular isolation and became famous for their large THCA crystals with purity levels over 99 percent. Some other companies managed to more or less reproduce Guilds results with lower potency isolation, but the large crystal refinement wasnt ever consistently replicated by anyone else, largely because of how technically involved the process is.

Then, as the tastes of dabbers turned fromshatterto sauce, which is basically just a semi-separated mixture of viscous high-terpene extract and small THCA crystals, extractors found a simple, low-tech method for encouraging larger crystal formations. These sauce diamonds have become an object of obsession for many concentrate connoisseurs and are a favorite on social media, where their striking aesthetics make for some dazzling imagery, whether its a casual snap from a bragging dabber or a studio portrait of a massive crystal.

Cannabis extraction, in general, is all about removing inert plant matter and isolating the primary cannabis compounds desired by humans, which break down into two main groups:terpenesandcannabinoids. Terpenes, which give cannabis its unique spectrum of scents and flavors and play a crucial role in the entourage effect (the idea that cannabinoids work best in harmony with one another) are liquid at room temperature and regular pressure. On the other hand, cannabinoids compounds which directly interact with your bodys endocannabinoid system to produce the physiological impacts of cannabis consumption take solid form under typical conditions.

Almost all cannabis concentrates contain both terpenes and cannabinoids, making them susceptible to a process called nucleation, which ultimately causes them to separate. If youve ever seen what happens to an old envelope of shatter, then youve witnessed the result of nucleation, which is fundamentally the same physical process that creates sauce diamonds. The difference is that when shatter nucleates, it generally doesnt form crystalline structures, at least not ones that you can see. But using a simple process sometimes called jar tech or diamond mining, you can create large crystal formations using little more than time.

As I noted in my book with cannabis legendEd Rosenthal, Beyond Buds: Next Generation, most large sauce diamonds start as BHO live resin, which is created by running fresh or flash frozen cannabis (instead of cured buds) through a closed loop extractor. The resulting oil receives a light purge without a vacuum to offgas most of the oils residual solvents. The liquid that remains is poured into jars and left alone for two or three weeks, at which point there should be substantial crystal growth. The process is based on separation, so youll also get a viscous, high-terpene extract with cannabinoid crystals.

Some extractors will boost crystal formation by adding other solvents, but not Josh Zeise, lead extractor atDabX, an extraction company based out of Oak Harbor, Washington that specializes in sauce diamonds.

We do a live butane or propane extraction. We dont use pentane thats called cheating, he said. Well use natural-derived, steam-distilled terpenes. All we use to make the diamonds is live resin for our live diamonds or fresh/cured material for our regular diamonds.

Steinfarm says DabX diamonds are some of his favorite to photograph, anda glance at these images explains why. But he stressed that the quality can be both seen and tasted, and that hes yet to find anything else quite like it in the Pacific Northwest.

Zeise said its fun to watch the crystals form in the jar, and that for a certain kind of cannabis consumer, dabbing a big THCA diamond is the ultimate experience. However, he said he also makes sauces with smaller crystals for those seeking a more even-handed potency.

You get those THC chasers, so its always nice to offer the big diamonds just for them, he said, adding that his deep stash of in-house genetics lets him dial in strains for both crystal size and terpene intensity. The Orange Kush is what you need for big crystals, the Dutch Treat brings the terps.

The science behind jar tech is relatively uncomplicated, but as with many facets of the emerging legal cannabis industry particularly in California the regulations concerning extraction are dense and sometimes a bit arbitrary.

Rodney Galgiani is the head of extraction atApex Solutionsin Oakland, California and is responsible for their top-shelf products, including those from leading NorCal brands likeTerp Boys. He says regulatory restrictions make jar tech as its practiced illegal.

At issue are the glass jars used to store the crystallizing hash oil. These containers dont comply with the stringent process requirements for extractors under Californias regulatory framework, and while Galgiani has experimented with other containers and workarounds, he says its proven to be more trouble than its worth. He said the profit margins are already so slim that creating compliant procedures is hardly worth it.

Unfortunately, he says he doesnt see big sauce diamonds featuring in the legal market moving forward. During a visit to the Apex laboratory, he pointed to a 2-ounce jar filled with big, glimmering crystals sitting inside a vacuum oven.

Those are the last big diamonds thatll ever come out of this lab, he said. Its all about applesauce [with smaller crystals] moving forwardwhen it comes down to it, you need the terps, and if you just have a couple of huge crystals in the jar, its not getting distributed evenly.

Of course, the regulatory hurdles that seem poised to slap the lid on jar tech wont affect producers like Guild, who create crystalline THCA diamonds using other proprietary methods, but if it becomes a little easier to distinguish your cannabis social media feed from a boutique in Antwerp in the coming months, youll know why.

From a practical standpoint, it doesnt make sense to chase large THCA diamonds. Most obviously, smaller crystal formations more evenly distributed throughout a terpene-rich base allow for more uniform potency. But also, the smaller crystals in terp sauce are quicker to produce, there are fewer testing and regulatory headaches for the extractor, and on balance, its a more useful product for the consumer.

Still I find myself gazing into the glimmering asymmetry of a 2.5-karat THCA diamond, regarding its luminescent clarity with a dreamy smile Ive never given to a half-gram of hash before. I gingerly clutch the shimmering crystal with a pair of tweezers and raise it into a sunbeam thats captured and refracted into prismatic flashes of sparkling rainbow light. These become more intense and frequent as I subtly tilt the diamond in the light, and for a moment Im mesmerized, lost inside its jagged natural facets.

My hypnotic trance is broken by the insistent electric screeching of a timer Ive set for my dab. With just the slightest pang of regret, I drop the gem into a warm banger. It melts into a bubbling puddle and vanishes into a wisp of mist and rides the light once more, as I exhale upward and that same sunbeam illuminates an angular blade of vapor, framing the turbulent trajectory of whirling spectral serpents on their first and final flight.
