skullcandy crusher wireless headphones review - headphone review

skullcandy crusher wireless headphones review - headphone review

A few years ago, Skullcandy launched the Skullcandy Crusher headphones, which were wired headphones that made use of AA batteries to deliver a super pumped-up bass response. Now, the company is back with another attempt this time doing away with the AA batteries and the wire in favor of a rechargeable and wireless pair of headphones called the Skullcandy Crusher Wireless.

The first thing youll notice about the headphones is their design, and they look great. We were very pleasantly surprised, not only with how good they look, but also at how well-built they seem to be. The headphones were reviewing are a sleek matte black, though the headphones also come in a gray/tan combo, which also looks quite good.

As far as build materials go, theres some metal and quite a lot of plastic though the plastic is very high-quality and seems strong. We didnt come across any times in which we thought the headphones might break though of course youll always want to be careful when packing them in a bag.

On the right ear cup youll find the volume up and volume down buttons, as well as a central multi-use button. On the left ear cup is where youll find the bass boost slider, as well as a microUSB port and a 3.5mm port. The buttons are really quite easy to use, even while the headphones are sitting on your head. Thats because the main buttons are somewhat large, and its easy to feel which button is for what, considering the fact that theyre each shaped differently.

In the box, youll find a slew of accessories, including a carry bag, microUSB charging cable, and a 3.5mm aux cable. Its a good selection of accessories, and while we always like seeing a hard case over a soft bag, its not a deal breaker by any means to not get one.

The headphones look pretty good, and thankfully theyre pretty comfortable too though theyre not perfect. As youll notice in the photos, the headphones feature quite a lot of padding, both in the ear cups and in the headband. That padding is needed though the headphones have quite a hard clamp. In fact, we would have liked a slightly less intense clamp, which would have made the headphones quite a bit more comfortable than they are.

Still, that doesnt mean theyre uncomfortable theyre not. We were able to wear the headphones for a few hours at a time, and while it did get a little tiring considering the clamp, it wasnt too bad. Not only that, but the clamp will likely weaken a little over time and as the headphones get used more.

Audiophiles and those looking for a relatively accurate sound will want to keep looking, but those into boosted bass may appreciate what these headphones have to offer. Thats because these headphones canseriously pump out the bass to unsafe levels if you so choose.

With the bass boost switch turned all the way down, the bass is actually relatively well-tuned. Its strong and powerful, to be sure, but it wont blow your brains out. Turn that bass boost switch up, and all that changes to the point that the headphones actually vibrate with the bass and it feels like a subwoofer has been implanted into your brain. Ridiculous? Absolutely, but the good thing here is that the listener has control. The headphones also seem to be built to resonate at a certain frequency, which further helps make that bass sound even stronger than it is. That makes these headphones perfect for the mega-bass fans out there, and even they might need to keep the bass boost at relatively low levels.

The mid-range is decently well-tuned, with a warm and present low-mids, and a high-mids that seems to dip slightly. The high-end is also slightly dipped but thats not all that unexpected from a pair of headphones aimed at being so bass-heavy. Thats not to say that the high frequencies arent there either they are. Its just that they could be boosted a little.

The Skullcandy Crusher Wireless headphones connect to your listening device through Bluetooth, and as such theyll offer a standard range of 10 meters, or around 33 feet. We didnt experience too many issues with the connectivity, except through a lot of obstacles and unreasonable distances though that is to be expected.

The battery life on the headphones sits in at a massive 40 hours, which is excellent. Thats a lot more than you should expect on most pairs of headphones, and while your results will vary depending on use, and you may not actually get 40 hours, even 30 hours is a lot of listening time.

The Skullcandy Crusher Wireless headphones look great, are decently comfortable, and, at least for bass fans, will sound great. We didnt find the bass switch all that helpful considering the fact that youll go from 0 to 100 real quick but some might like it, especially with a small and subtle boost.

The headphones go up against some competition, but if youre looking for a great pair of headphones with a ton of battery life and super high bass, then we dont think you can go wrong. So much so, that weve awarded the Skullcandy Crusher Wireless headphones the Headphone Review Bronze Medal.

If youre a fan of big bass, you could buy a pair of headphones that are tuned to offer that at all times. But what if you dont want big bass all the time? Thats the idea behind the Skullcandy Crusher Evo headphones, which have a bass slider built right into them, so you can raise the bass when you want it.

The headphones are built with a combination of a nice rubberized plastic, over a metal frame, and as a result it should be able to withstand most of the abuse you can throw at it on a day to day basis. And, they look nice too there isnt too much branding, and a classy leather covering on the top of the headband.

On the right ear cup, there are three buttons for playback and volume control. On the left ear cup, youll find a USB-C port and aux port, a power button, and the bass slider that makes the headphones unique. Its a good selection of controls, and set up to be pretty easy to control too.

The Skullcandy Crusher Evo headphones are built with a nice leather, and theyre not too heavy either. Generally speaking, the headphones are comfortable to wear, and we were able to wear them for a matter of hours before they ever got uncomfortable.

Given the bass switch, perhaps the most interesting and unique thing about this headset is its frequency response. As you would expect from a pair of headphones in this price range, they sound pretty good.

Turn on the bass switch and things get a bit silly. All the way up, the headphones well and truly start pounding, and we think the vast majority of bass fans will even find it too much. If you really want a bass boost, youll probably be content with something in the middle, and probably on the lower end, considering the bass boost also adds considerable muddiness.

We were pleasantly surprised to find that despite the focus on bass response, the Skullcandy Crusher Evo headphones still offer decent high-end response. Cymbals shine through a mix nicely, and vocals offer a good amount of sibilance.

The Skullcandy Crusher Evo headphones connect to your listening device through Bluetooth 5.0, and we found that they retained a pretty good connection throughout testing. That said, they unfortunately do not support Bluetooth multipoint, so you cant connect them to more than one device at a time. Hopefully more companies will start adopting this standard.

Even better, however, is the fact that the headphones have an impressive 40-hour battery life. Thats definitely on the high-end and means that you shouldnt have to worry about charging too often. And, the headphones support fast charging tech, which is perfect for those times when you forget to charge.

The Skullcandy Crusher Evo headphones have a lot to offer. The bass slider can be fun to play with at times, but even if it wasnt there, these would be a great option. Thats because of the fact that the headphones are relatively well-designed, comfortable, and sound pretty great.

While the headphones are a little pricey, at $200, we actually think theyre one of the best options in the price range. Now, of course, theyre probably not the headphones for you if youre looking for noise cancelling headphones or headphones with Bluetooth multipoint but if youre not looking for those things, we definitely recommend the Skullcandy Crusher Evo headphones.

skullcandy crusher evo vs crusher anc: which should you buy? - gearbrain

skullcandy crusher evo vs crusher anc: which should you buy? - gearbrain

Skullcandy wireless headphones are excellent devices, and that includes the Crusher series which includes the Crusher ANC and the Crusher Evo. Both have haptic feedback and also Tile trackers inside but they also differ in a couple of different ways. Which one of these make sense for you? Here's how to tell.

The Skullcandy Crusher ANC headphones have active noise cancelling technology, to make listening more immersive. To further enhance how the Crusher ANC sound, users can connect to Skullcandy's app and from there customize the actual sound they hear personalizing the playback to someone's audio needs, and to their preferences. The app actually lets you create multiple sound profiles so if you want to share the headphones with others you can.

Crusher ANC also have optional haptic feedback while they play. What that means is you can feel vibrations during heavy bass, which can enhance what you're watching like an action movie, for example. (And yes, you can turn this feature off too.)

The Skullcandy Crusher Evo headphones, like the Crusher ANC, have Tile trackers packed inside which allow you to find them if they're connected to Bluetooth. And also like the ANC headphones, you can connect these to the Skullcandy app and create a personalized sound profile for your hearing.

We did, however find an issue with the app when it came to the Evo, where the sound actually came across more poorly after creating a sound profile. Once disconnected, the sound actually was excellent and sync with movies even better with the Evo than the ANC.

But like the ANC headphones, you can also experience haptic feedback with the Crusher Evo headphones, which create a vibration when they're playing heavy bass or using them at louder volumes. This is of course an optional feature, and you can turn it off.

We tested and reviewed both pairs of headphones and think they're both good options in terms of sound quality and the fact they include Tile Trackers, plus haptic feedback fun for watching movies and for gaming.

Why then spend another $50 on the Skullcandy Crusher ANC? If you're looking for a pair of headphones with active noise cancelling, then this would be a reason to select the ANC headphones, so too the nice carrying case that comes with this pair.

But if ANC is not something you need, then we think the Crusher Evo are an excellent sounding pair of headphones with a solid Bluetooth connection, and additional features that mirror the Crusher ANC but at a lower price. The choice, as always, is yours to make.
