The Pool Supplies Superstore is pleased to offer free next day delivery at no additional charge to most of the US for many of our most popular swimming pool supplies. Next Day Delivery Service does not mean Next Day Air, but simply that your qualifying products will be shipped from the warehouse closest to you resulting in delivery the next day. We do have a shipping charge of only $9.99 for orders under $100.00.

Some details regarding this service: Other than for Pleasant Prairie, not all products are stocked at all locations and therefore not available for next day delivery. Only those items with a Next Day Delivery designation on the product page can be expected to arrive the next day and orders must be placed by 4 PM CT (exceptions include areas serviced by our Texas and Tennessee warehouses: Texas by 2:30 PM and Tennessee by 3 PM).

If you reside in the next day delivery area served by our Pleasant Prairie facility, order in-stock products and place your order by 4 PM CT you should receive your order the next day (except Saturday or Sunday). This applies to products even if they do not have a Next Day Delivery designation. Because next day delivery is not guaranteed for standard service and residential deliveries are made only Monday through Saturday though Saturday delivery is not guaranteed, there is a chance that our product will not arrive the next day. While we try our best, unexpected demand can cause products to occasionally be out of stock or create a warehouse backlog that also can prevent shipment the day of the order.

Chlorine is by far the most popular sanitizer used in swimming pools. It is a powerful disinfectant that reliably destroys the bacteria, algae, and other contaminants that are commonly found in pool water. Chlorine is also used in municipal water systems to treat drinking water so that it is safe for consumption. In 2020, chlorine consumption increased dramatically, largely bec

bromine vs. chlorine: what's the difference?

bromine vs. chlorine: what's the difference?

Chlorine and Bromine are both chemicals that are situated very near each other on the Periodic Table of Elements. As Halogens, they can be very dangerous in their elemental state. Luckily, the versions we use to clean our pools and spas are actually chemical compounds.

Chlorine comes in several different forms: tablets, sticks, and in a dry granular state. The most popular version by far is chlorine tablets. These dissolve slowly in your pool or spa in a floating or automatic feeder, making them the most low-maintenance option.

If you opt to clean your pool with bromine, youre going to find that its pretty similar to how you would add chlorine. Bromine comes in tablets and granules too and can be dispersed in much the same way.

The consensus amongst pool experts (ahem) is that bromine is best added through a floating dispenser in tablet form. It does, however, require its own feeder that may add to the initial cost of doing business.

Both chlorine and bromine kill bacteria and decontaminate your pool and spa water and they do it in similar ways. The two major differences between these chemicals are: how they affect people physically and how they react to higher water temperatures. And on that cliffhanger

When you add chlorine to your pool or spa, the chlorine molecules go to work right away attacking contaminants through a process called oxidation. This means that the chlorine literally steals electrons from whatever gunk happens to be in your pool, changing its molecular structure.

Through this chemical reaction, chlorine leaves behind a waste product called chloramines. If you ever wondered where the stinky chlorine smell the chemical is known for comes from, now you know. Chloramines are what cause swimmers the itchy, dry skin and stinky smell that we generally associate with the chemical itself.

Bromine, on the other hand, works by a process called ionization. Its the same basic idea: bromine combines with bacteria but actually forces apart the chemical bonds of its adversary. Bromine also has a lower pH than chlorine, so balancing your water chemistry is going to be a breeze using this sanitizing method.

The difference here is that once chlorine has done its job, the waste it leaves behind (chloramines) actually decrease chlorines overall effectiveness. Its used up, burned off, and its gone. Whereas even after bromine has sanitized the water, it is still active and continues to work, without the smelly aftereffects.

Another important difference is the amount of each chemical required to do the same job. As a result of the chemical processes of each, the bottom line is that less bromine is needed to sanitize the same amount of water.

No matter what we tell you here, its important that you always consult the manufacturers instructions before adding anything to your pool or spa. Chemical formulations are different and each pool/spa has its own specifications. Once youve followed the guidelines and tested the water, youll be able to decide if more disinfectant is necessary.

A good rule of thumb is to always aim for the higher end of the spectrum with each chemical. Although it looks like you need to use more bromine than chlorine to get the same outcome, the reality is that you dont have to add bromine to your pool or spa as often. So it evens out.

Chlorine is a fast-acting chemical. It rips through the gunk in your pool very quickly and then is done. Bromine, although highly-reactive, is a little bit more laid back than chlorine. It works more slowly but works longer than chlorine.

As we mentioned above, chlorine works faster but for a shorter period of time while bromine works longer at a slower pace. The big difference between chlorine and bromine here is going to be how they act in warm water.

If youre a spa owner, make sure you take notes here. Bromine is a lot more stable than chlorine (obviously, because of how it functions more slowly) but especially so in warm water. This is one of the major reasons that bromine is primarily used in spas, whereas chlorine is used in swimming pools.

But heres where one big exception comes in. Bromine is more stable than chlorine except when it comes to UV light. The radiation from the sun destroys both chemicals without mercy, but bromine breaks down more quickly here. This is why if youre using bromine in your spa or hot tub, its a really good idea to keep your cover on it during the day.

You spend your hard-earned money on these chemicals and you want them to break down while doing their job of decontaminating your pool/spa water. You dont want them breaking down early due to water temperature or UV radiation from the sun.

The good news is that if youre using these chemicals in their correct quantities and according to manufacturer guidelines, they are completely safe for humans. Youre waiting for the catch, right? Well there is one and that is that everyone reacts to things differently.

For example, I have never been able to open my eyes underwater in the pool no matter what pool I was in. My eyes are super-sensitive and it was just too painful for me to do. Needless to say, I was always jealous of my friends who could.

Chlorine can be particularly harsh, especially for people with sensitive skin and/or eyes (me) and to those with asthma or other breathing conditions. When the chlorine in your pool is doing what its supposed to, the byproduct produced (chloramines) can wreak havoc on your skin, discolor your hair, and fade the colors of your new swimsuit.

Bromine is a great alternative for people with chlorine sensitivities as it tends to be gentler on the skin. It is much less abrasive than chlorine, its odor is not as strong and chemical-smelling, and it doesnt have the same likelihood of triggering asthma attacks from the chloramines hovering in the air above the water.

The only major drawback to bromine is that it does leave a lingering chemical smell on your skin that is much more difficult to scrub off than chlorine. Bromine is definitely a great option for people with sensitivities but it is still chlorine-based, so if you or someone you know is actually allergic to chlorine, bromine is not going to be a safe alternative.

Okay, heres where we get to it. The main reason that bromine isnt used nearly as much as chlorine is the cost. Depending on where you buy, it can cost anywhere from a few bucks more to (possibly) double the price of chlorine.

The equipment required for bromine is going to cost a bit more too. Bromine requires a floating feeder or cartridge system to function properly. Its more complicated than chlorine so the learning curve can sometimes scare pool/spa owners away from giving it a try.

Bromine doesnt clean-and-run like chlorine. It keeps working a lot longer with the same amount of chemical, its lower pH will help keep your water balanced more effectively, and its much more stable in higher heat, making it a great choice for hot tubs. All of these factors may contribute to the costs actually evening out a bit.

Bromineandchlorinewill sanitize and oxidize pool or spa water, butbromineworksbetterat higher temperatures and is softer on the skin, whereaschlorineis cheaper, works for longer, and doesnt break down as quickly in ultraviolet light, especially when coupled with cyanuric acid.

Hopefully you now have a better idea about your options when it comes to pool and spa sanitizers. Whichever method you choose, its important to remember the foundations of pool maintenance and keep your levels where they need to be and your water balanced.

pool chlorine & bromine tablets - in stock now! - in the swim

pool chlorine & bromine tablets - in stock now! - in the swim

According to the CDC, free chlorine kills most bacteria in less than a minute if concentrations and pH level are maintained properly. Swimming pool chlorine is the most widely accepted pool sanitizer available, and for over 75 years, pool chlorine has been the most popular method to disinfect and sanitize pool water. Pool bromine can be used as an alternative pool water treatment, yet chlorine tablets and granular chlorine remain America's first choice for maintaining clean and clear pool water.

The general rule is that bromine is more often used in spas and hot tubs, and chlorine is more often used in pools. Although they are close cousins and adjacent to each other on the Periodic Table, bromine and chlorine have distinct differences, and unique benefits to offer pool owners.

In The Swim pool chlorine dissolves fast and almost instantly begins to sanitize your pool water. In The Swim 3 Inch Chlorine Tablets are 8 oz. stabilized pool tablets, and are also available as a 0.5 oz. pellet, in our 1 Inch Chlorine Tablets, for very small or very large pools. In The Swim 8 oz. Slow Dissolving Chlorine Sticks work fast and last longer. Our 3-inch Super Multi-Tabs are unique chlorine tabs with stabilizer, algaecide and clarifier added. Sticks or tablets can be used in chlorine floaters, or place the pucks into an in-line or off-line chlorine feeder, to provide a daily sanitizer level that is consistent and constant.

In The Swim granular chlorine like the economical Cal-Hypo granular chlorine and stabilized Di-Chlor chlorine granules are both available loose in buckets and also sold in 1-pound bags, as Pool Shock, Super Shock and Di-Zap. Pre-dissolve chlorine granules into a large bucket of water for vinyl pools, or sprinkle the powder directly into concrete pools, spas and fountains to maintain sanitizer levels, to raise low levels rapidly, or to super-chlorinate the pool. Granular chlorine is used regularly to quickly kill algae and bacteria, and to oxidize microscopic particles and contaminants in the water.

Chloramines form when a chlorine molecule has combined with ammonia or nitrogen to produce the familiar scent often associated with swimming pools - thats not the smell of free chlorine, but of combined chlorine. As chloramines build up they reduce the effectiveness of your sanitizer. When the chloramine level (Total - Free Chlorine) is greater than 0.3 ppm, (TC-FC=CC), this is time to add pool shock to your pool to remove the chloramines.

UV rays from the sun breakdown chlorine which makes your sanitizer less effective. Although In The Swim pool chlorine tablets are stabilized, it takes some time for a residual to build up. Pool stabilizer (aka conditioner) contains cyanuric acid to reduce sunlight degradation. Its like sunscreen for your chlorine, and will save you money in the long run.

The pH of your pool water has a large effect on the efficacy or potency of your chlorine. In addition to maintaining stabilizer levels in the 30-50 ppm range, keeping a close eye on pH will reduce your chlorine costs, and also help ensure clean and clear pool water. At a high-pH level of 8.2, over half (+50%) of your chlorine is wasted. Pool chlorine works best at low pH ranges of 7.2-7.4, and becomes less active in higher pH pool water.

In The Swim Bromine Tablets are slow-dissolving by nature, and can take longer to build up a residual, although bromides can be added to quickly boost levels. Bromine is also un-stabilized, so it does not stand up well to bright sunlight. However, bromine tablets are popular for indoor pools or heavily shaded outdoor pools. Bromine pools have a softer smell of pool bromine, and can re-activate bromides into bromine, simply by shocking the pool (with chlorine!).

To use bromine in a pool, you will need to have a bromide ion 'bank' built up, or a preexisting level of bromide ions (the reduced form of bromine). Many bromine users add Brom Booster to raise levels quickly when converting a pool to bromine. Then you simply use the bromine tabs in a brominator (bromine floaters are not as effective). In The Swim Bromine is a BDCMH formula that stands up to sun degradation better than other bromine tablets, and contain no cyanuric acid.

chlorine vs bromine - pros, cons, comparisons and costs

chlorine vs bromine - pros, cons, comparisons and costs

Having a pool in your backyard is a wonderful way to cool off and relax on a hot summers day. And, a spa or hot tub can be enjoyed year-round in any climate. However, regular maintenance is necessary to keep the pool or spa water sparkling clean. The two most popular sanitizing options are chlorine1 and bromine. Which one is right for you? We present the pros and cons of each so that you can make an informed decision.

Chlorine and bromine work in different ways to sanitize your pool water. Chlorine is both an oxidizer and sanitizer. When chlorine is added to the pool water in a shock treatment, it quickly combines with the bacteria and kills it and is then largely burned up and eliminated by the filters. You will need to add chlorine every other day or so.

On the other hand, bromine is only a sanitizer. It takes longer to activate once it is added to the water, but it remains active even after it kills the bacteria. This means that you may only need to add bromine once a week.

Chlorine can be applied in three different ways: granules, liquid, or tablets. The granules or liquid can be added directly to the water without any specialized equipment, while the tablets are placed in a floating dispenser to maintain adequate levels of chlorine in the water.

Bromine, however, is best dispensed through a floating feeder or cartridge dispenser, which adds to the initial cost of using bromine. One application of bromine can last up to a week, while chlorine needs to be added every other day or so.

Cost is not the only factor to take into account when deciding between chlorine and bromine for your pool or spa. Bromine is much better for people with sensitivities because it is much less irritating to both skin and eyes. However, if an allergy to chlorine is an issue, bromine will not work either because it is also chlorine-based. The only options left are a peroxide-based system or silver or copper-based ion generators.

Bromine does not emit the same strong chlorine smell like chlorine, but the same stability that keeps it active for up to a week in your pool or spa water makes the odor it has harder to rinse off your skin after a swim.

An outdoor pool is inevitably going to be in the direct sun, and both chlorine and bromine break down easily when exposed to UV rays. However, chlorine can be stabilized with a conditioner to keep it working, but there is nothing that can stabilize bromine. This makes bromine a better choice for an indoor pool or spa.

Bromine works better at higher temperatures than chlorine. Above 75F, bromine remains stable, whereas chlorine is more effective in temperatures as low as 65F. This makes bromine a better choice for hot tubs and spas, and an unheated pool will be better served by the use of chlorine.

Chlorine oxidizes when it is working, removing not only bacteria but also organic matter such as body oils from the water. This helps keep the pool water sparkling clear. Bromines lower pH makes it less efficient at removing organic debris, leading to a cloudier appearance. It will need an occasional shock with chlorine to keep the water as clean as possible.

chlorine shortage: alternatives

chlorine shortage: alternatives

2021 is the year of the shortage. Cars, computers, oil, gas, and now Chlorine. Unlike the other items on the shortage list there are quite a few alternatives to Chlorine. Some are known and used often and others not so much. Lets dive in and take a look at all of our choices going forward. For the most part in the pool industry there are 4 or 5 safe Chlorine alternatives for pool professional and weekend warriors alike. Salt chlorination systems, Bromine, Mineral systems, Ozone generators, and AOP Hydroxyl Systems. Of course there are plenty more alternatives but these are the most common in our opinion. The first alternative well cover is Salt Chlorination systems. These systems work by taking pool water and sodium through a process called electrolysis. Once the cell generates chlorine it is simply returned to the pool or body of water chlorinated and clean.

The next alternative well dive into is Bromine. Bromine is the most common chlorine alternative in tablet form. Bromine acts as a sanitizer and oxidizer for pools and bodys of water. Bromine works by pushing hypobromous acid into water and binding organic materials. Chlorine and Bromine are both halogens and as such both are known to be bad for skin, causing irritation and sore eyes. Bromine is also twice the cost of Chlorine and has always been the more expensive option. With that being said Bromine doesnt have a strong odor and is applicable for spa use as well.

Next up is Mineral systems. Mineral systems work by usually using magnesium chloride, sodium chloride, and or potassium chloride. For the most part it isnt possible to entirely replace chlorine, however, these systems allow for a reduction in the amount of chlorine required in the body of water or swimming pool. Mineral systems work by effectively upping or buffing the active minerals already present in the water while adding in other minerals to work with one another. There are premade drop-in systems that need to be added and changed periodically similar to a chlorine float. With the price tag, mineral systems are usually reserved for those very sensitive to chlorine.

Ozone Generators work similar to our own ozone. Instead of adding anything to the water, the water is sanitized and cleaned during normal filtration. With that being said it only works so well and another additive like chlorine or bromine is required to kill algae and ensure the body of water is actually clean and stays clean. While the ozone system will clean the water, the added chlorine or other chemicals will maintain the levels for longer and at a better rate of effectiveness.

The last, and newest system to our team is the Clear Comfort AOP Pool System. The AOP has drinking water levels of chlorine and is really a game changer. This system easily treats 90 GPM and comes standard with a best in class 5 year warranty from the manufacturer. To build on that, the AOP has a 90 day testing period with the option to return the product for a full refund. This system tackles medium to large residential pools and spas. Similar to our ozone the AOP system creates hydroxyl radicals to oxidize and disinfect the body of water. The AOP grabs oxygen and converts it to Atomic Oxygen.

After conversion, the system injects the Atomic Oxygen via a venturi to mix and react with the water present in the pool. At this point, Hydroxyl Radicals are created and introduced into the polluted water.

Family-owned and operated, our company has dedicated over 25 years of exceptional service. With extensive experience in pool repair and manufacturing, we cater to all your pool and spa needs with the utmost customer assistance.

In order to have a perfect water, it is necessary to carry out analytical tests that allow you to know the values of the water parameters. It is recommended to review: chlorine, pH, alkalinity and stabilizer. The correct adjustment of all these parameters improves the dissolution of the chemical products and in general advantage the disinfecting process of chlorine and other systems.

bromine vs. chlorine for spas & hot tubs

bromine vs. chlorine for spas & hot tubs

Trichlor chlorine tablets, the 1" size, are about 20% cheaper thanbromine tablets. The 3" tablets are over 40% cheaper when you buy in bulk. Chlorine does have a shelf life, however, and after about a year, depending on the temperature it is stored at, the chlorine can lose half of its power. Cal-hypo or dichlor shock, two types of pool shocks, are also cheaper thannon-chlorine shock.

Both challengers are fairly convenient. Simply purchase a small quantity of 1" tablets (3" tablets are too slow dissolving for hot tubs), and put enough in afloating dispenserto give a good reading when the water is tested.

However, bromine requires a bank of built up bromides before you can register a reading with yourtest kit. Adding another small step in the process, you can shake a littleBrom Boosterinto the tub after draining a spa, or you can use the 2 oz.sodium bromide packets.

Bromine is not as easily protected from the sun as chlorine is from addingstabilizeror cyanuric acid. But then again, most hot tubs are covered and out of the sun. And although bromine lost the first round for being more expensive than chlorine, it has the curious property of reactivation.

Bromide salts can be reactivated into bromine by adding a small amount ofchlorine shockorMPS shock. This allows you to reuse the bromide again and again, and you use lessbromine tablets. With chlorine, however, once the killing work is done, the chlorine molecule becomes inert.

Bromine has a big advantage over chlorine in killing bacteria and viruses, whereas chlorine has an advantage in killing algae more rapidly. Bromamines continue to be an active sanitizer, in contrast with chloramines, as we will see in the next round.

Bromine comes out swinging! At a high pH, say of 7.8, only about 25% of chlorine is active. Bromine is not affected by pH swings as much and continues to be effective, even when a full hot tub quickly raises pH levels.

Third, when bromine or chlorine combine with nitrogen or ammonia, they form bromamines or chloramines. In chlorine, the compound formed becomes an ineffective sanitizer, and is responsible for red eyes, itchy skin and that awful chlorine smell. Bromamines, on the other hand, continue to be active sanitizers without the smell or irritation.

If you have a spa, bromine has a lot of advantages over using chlorine. It may cost a little bit more, but it lasts longer and does a much better job than chlorine at killing bacteria, especially at high temperatures and high pH levels.
