This article throws light upon the eight main types of limit gauges. The types are: 1. Plug Gauge 2. Pin Gauge 3. Snap Gauge 4. Ring Gauge 5. Calliper Gauge 6. Thickness or Feeler Gauge 7. Radius or Fillet Gauge 8. Screw Pitch Gauge.

A plug gauge is a cylindrical type of gauge, used to check the accuracy of holes. The plug gauge checks whether the whole diameter is within specified tolerance or not. The Go plug gauge is the size of the low limit of the hole while the Not-Go plug gauge corresponds to the high limit of the hole.

When the holes to be checked are large than 75mm, such as automobile cylinder, it is convenient to use a pin gauge as shown in Fig. 1.42. During measurement, the gauge is placed lengthwise across the cylinder bore and measurement is made. These gauges are especially useful in measurement of width of grooves or slots.

Snap gauges are available in different designs. Snap gauge may be single ended or double ended. Snap gauge may have fixed or adjustable jaws. Generally Go and Not-Go both the features are provided in a single jaw.

A ring gauge is in the form of a ring, used to check the shafts and male members. The Go and Not Go members may be separate or in a single ring. The opening or hole in the Go gauge is larger than that in the Not-Go gauge.

A calliper gauge is similar to a snap gauge, but it is used to check both the inside and outside dimensions. Its one end check the inside dimensions (hole diameter) while its another end checks outside dimensions (shaft diameter).

Thickness or feeler gauge is frequently used to measure clearances between components. These gauges are ideal for measuring narrow slots, clearances, setting small gap, and determining fit between mating parts.

A feeler gauge consists of a set of narrow strips or blades of sheet to a thickness marked on each strip. The complete set consists of a number of strips of different thickness assembled together as shown in fig 1.46. The width of each strip is generally available to 12.5mm.

Teeth are hard structures found exclusively in all vertebrates. Granted, some invertebrates have analogous teeth, but they are quite different in their structure and functions. There are different types of teeth found in humans.

Unlike pythons and pelicans, humans cannot swallow food in one big gulp. Food must be broken down into smaller pieces before it can be swallowed. This function is performed by hard, calcified structures called teeth.

Humans have different types of teeth that perform various functions such as cutting, tearing, shearing, grinding and crushing. The teeth are powered by the jaw muscles and lubrication is done with the help of saliva, which is produced in the salivary glands.

Vertebrates possess teeth that vary in structure and numbers. These arrangements of teeth are expressed through a special formula called thedental formula, which is expressed in the form offractions.

Teeth are one of the strongest parts of the human body. It is mainly composed ofproteins (collagen) and minerals (calcium). Apart from the digestion, teethalso play an important role in ourspeech. An adult will have 32 teeth, including the Wisdom teeth.Molars are the first permanent teeth to develop in, andmost of the adults will have their complete set of permanent teeth in placeby the age of 21.

Babies are born toothless as their primary source of food is mothers milk. As the babies start to wean,milk teeth gradually start to appear. Milk teeth get replaced by permanent teeth by the time the individual turns six years old. Among the four types of teeth, the lower incisors are the first primary teeth to develop in, andmost kids will have all their twenty primary teeth by age 3, which includes:

Teeth have different shapes as each tooth has a particular role to perform during mastication (chewing) and eventually digestion. They are also positioned differently, so as to better serve their purpose.

Incisors are present at the front of the mouth. These teethhave sharp edges and are adapted for cutting food into small, chewable pieces. Humans have eight incisors, four incisorsin the upper jaw and four in the lower jaw.

Canines are also called cuspids. They are situated at the corners of the dental arches. They are characteristically sharp, elongated and pointy surface. Their primary function is to grip and tear food (tough food such as meat). Humans have four canines,two in the upper jaw and two in the lower jaw.

Premolars arealso called bicuspids and are located behind the canines. These teeth have a flat surface with ridges, which is adapted for crushingand grinding food intosmaller portions. Humans have eight premolars, two on each side of the jaws.

Molars are the largest andstrongest teeth. It has a large and flat biting surface, which is well-adapted for grinding food. Humans have 12 molars, six in each jaw. Four of those are wisdom teeth, which is also called the third molar, which come in between the ages of 17 to 25.

Wisdom teeth also referred to as the third set of molars. They are the vestigial and final set of molars. This set of teeth appear between the age of 18 to 25.As per the reports and dentists advice, most of them remove their wisdom teeth, and this is mainly because of the poor alignment and partial eruption, which results in the bacterial infectious diseases, pain, swelling and stiffness of the jaw.

Humans and other mammals, including geckos, vertebrates, and reptilesare all classified as diphyodonts, which means they possess two successive sets of teeth in their lifetime milk teeth and permanent teeth.

Other vertebrates such as toothed fishes are classified as polyphyodonts, meaning that their teeth are continuously replaced during their lifetime. The only mammals which are polyphyodont are elephants, kangaroos and manatees.

In humans and other vertebrates, teeth play a fundamental role in the digestion and absorption process.Human beings eat food all through their lives. Hence, to withstand their prolonged use through years of chewing, teeth must be really hard and firmly anchored. The white, exposed part of the tooth is covered by enamel layer. This is the bodys hardest material.

Enamel is incredibly strong and is also translucent which means light can be observed through it.Though enamel is the bodys hardest tissue, it has no living cells. This means that if the tooth gets chipped or broken, there is no way for it to repair itself.

Types of Grinding Machine: Parts, Working Principle & Grinding Wheel :- A grinding machine is an industrial power tool that is used to perform the grinding operation. Grinding is the process of removing excess material from a workpiece by the application of the abrasion technique. Generally grinding is a finishing operation that is carried out after other machining operations. In the grinding process, abrasion takes place between abrasive material and workpiece by relative motion. In industrial uses, this relative motion is employed with the help of an electrical motor. This is generally electrically operated but, in some cases, other modes of operation can be used.

The grinding machine works on the principle of the grinding process. This is a machining process in which finishing work is carried out on the workpiece. In this process, a solid object composed of abrasive particles is given a relative motion with the workpiece. Due to this relative motion when these abrasive particles come in contact with the workpiece abrasion takes place and excess material is removed from the workpiece.

Generally, in this process, a wheel which is made up of abrasive particles is used which is known as a grinding wheel. This grinding wheel is rotated by an electrical motor. The rpm ranges between 150-15000 RPM depending on the type of machine and operation which is to be performed and finishing quality.

Grinding machine varies with the type of uses. A lot of variety of machines are available. So according to our requirement, the selection of grinding machine is necessary for the best output. Following are the few factors/parameters which plays a very important role in the selection of grinding machine

This depends on the region where the machine is to be used. For example, if a machine is used in India, then frequency and volt-rating should be 50Hz and 230V but for another region like the USA, the frequency and volt-rating should be 60Hz and 110V.

This is also the main parameter that affects the economy of the machine. For small process low power grinding machine are suitable and for large process the power rating should be increased as per requirement.

The movement of grinding head is fixed in different machine. In some machines head is not adjustable and in others head can be moved in one direction or in two directions. As per our requirement the machine is to be selected.

It is the most essential steps for the selection of grinding machine. It totally affects the cost and time in process. Mostly internal, external, and external centres type grinding machines are used. The requirement of these machines has increased in the market. For internal finishing of cylindrical objects internal grinder are used. External grinding machine are used to mainly finishing operations. External types machines are also available in centre less type in which two grinding wheels are provided for the centre of the work piece.

The volume of grinding operation is also important parameter. As a grinding machine has a capability of removing a certain amount volume that is to be removed. For small scale operation where the volume is low hence low volume machines are sufficient. On other hand for machining operation or large-scale operation high volume machine is good. Hence there is a requirement of a large-scale machine with a high investment for massive material grinding.

Latest grinding machines like SMSB SGC 3000 build use of diamond dressing wheels. These machines have the capability of grinding at least forty times more metals than normal machines. The oversized wheels of such grinding machines can grind larger objects at a faster rate. These kinds of machines are faster as compared to smaller manual course grinding.

Several kinds of activities involve manual efforts. Today, machines have several automated features that need fewer manual efforts. It may base the choice to buy the perfect grinding machines on experienced workers and wages. You should not get confused regarding this machine since certain machines become completely turned the way of working.

When labour costs are too high and there is a lack of labour, the semi-automated machine is best. The manual grinding process can trigger health risks. Thus, it is beneficial to use the semi-automation grinding machines. Businesses should follow safety standards. They should offer their labours bulletproof glasses and partial automation.

Grinding wheel is the most important part of the grinding machine. Grinding wheel performs the actual grinding operation. It consists mainly two components one is grinding cutting compound and other is bonding material between abrasives. It is mounted over the electrical motor shaft which rotates at very high speed.

It is very heavy and high strength part of the grinding machine. It rests on the ground and isolates the vibration to machine from the ground. It is made up of cast-iron casting. Other parts of the machine are mounted over it.

Table is mounted over the guide ways on which it can slide. Generally, two tables are provided, one is lower and other is upper. One of them is used for transverse motion and other is used for cross feed. These tables can be feed by hand or power.

It is mounted on the left side of the table. It is a casing in wheel driving mechanism, motor and gearbox is fitted. Control buttons are provided outside of it to control the speed of the motor. At the exit of head stock spindle with Chuck is provided to hold the work piece.

It consists of Grinding Wheel and driving motor and mounted on the middle of the table by some offset to the centre line of Tailstock and headstock. This is placed on the cross feed which moves perpendicular to the workpiece. Feed for the grinding wheel can be provided by hand or power.

As name suggests, these are small and light weight grinders. These are used where carrying the work piece to the grinder is not possible. In that case portable grinders are go to solution. These are very small and compact that it can be carried in one hand. These are low power consuming. For example, these are used in cutting of tiles and pipes.

This is similar to the above type of grinders, but the main difference is that it is used in cutting and machining operation. In this grinder belts having abrasive grains are used for operation and transmission of power as well. These have high grain size. These are more costly than floor and portable grinder.

Swing frame grinders are different from other grinders. As name says that the frame of grinding machine is moveable which makes easy to use in complicated space. In this grinder frame can independently move without moving the grinding wheel. This is used for heavy size work pieces.

Surface grinder is mostly like small table structure. The main component of this is abrasive wheel, a Chuck and a table which can swivel on the horizontal plane. The Chuck is used to hold the work piece and the with the help of table work piece is fed towards the grinding wheel.

Cylindrical grinders are big size grinders which are used to grind heavy parts. The main components of this type of grinder are base, bed, headstock, tailstock, work table and grinding wheel. The work piece is mounted on the Chuck of the headstock. When Chuck rotates the work, piece is also rotating. The grinding wheel mounted beside the headstock is fed towards the work piece by means of hand or power. Grinding wheel is driven by its own motor.

When grinding wheel comes in contact with work piece, due to relative velocity grinding operation takes place. The grinding wheel is mounted on cross feed which can move it in direction perpendicular to the work piece. This is more or like centre lathe machine type structure.

Tool and cutter grinders are used in CNC machines because it has multiple grinding wheels axes so that there is no need of changing the grinding wheel for the different operation. These grinders are mainly used in sharpening and making of cutting tools like milling cutters, drills, endmills, and step tools. It is widely used in metal cutting and wood working industries.

These grinders are used mainly for finishing process. In these grinders the abrasive particles are mounted on the internal side of the grinding wheel. These are used for grinding of cylindrical profiles from inside. These ranges from small to big size depending on the size of work piece.

Figure 29.16 illustrates schematically this machine and various motions required for grinding action. The workpiece is usually mounted in a chuck. A magnetic face plate can also be used. A small grinding wheel performs the necessary grinding with its peripheral surface. Both transverse and plunge grinding can be carried out in this machine as shown in Fig. 29.17.

Planetary internal grinder is used where the workpiece is of irregular shape and can not be rotated conveniently as shown in Fig. 29.18. In this machine the workpiece does not rotate. Instead, the grinding wheel orbits the axis of the hole in the workpiece.

This machine is used for grinding cylindrical and tapered holes in cylindrical parts (e.g. cylindrical liners, various bushings etc). The workpiece is rotated between supporting roll, pressure roll and regulating wheel and is ground by the grinding wheel as illustrated in Fig. 29.19

To use the grinding wheel, it first clamped to the grinding machine. Grinding wheel is then attached on the supporting arbors. The necessary force required to transfer the rotary motion. The force applies to the side of the wheels by sized flanges.

The grinding wheels obtained of different shapes like round, square, cup and dishes. Grinding wheels are ideal for a wide range of materials and can perform hard grinding of tools, like steels and other metals.

This results in the formation of the sold circular shape of various types of the grinding wheel. Depending on the usage of the wheel, there are various profiles and cross sections of the precision grinding wheel available.

The grinding wheels manufacturing takes place in a very precise and controlled process. This follows the prevention of the spinning disc from an explosion. This generally occurs due to high-stress conditions produced during rotations.

There are various important things taken into consideration for the grinding wheels. These include five characteristics, grain size, material, wheel grades, grain spacing, and the bond type. All these characteristics are indicated with the help of the color codes on the label of the wheel.

The type of material used as the abrasive grain depends on the hardness of the material that it grinds. This includes aluminum oxide, silicon carbide, ceramic, diamond, and cubic boron nitride. The grinding wheel prepared by using diamond and cubic boron nitride referred to as superabrasives. Those constructed with aluminum oxide, silicon carbide, ceramic grains referred to as a conventional type of abrasives.

The type of grain size determines the average physical size of the abrasive grain. The larger the grain size the faster it will cut and create a poor finish. For ultra fine grain sizes, they result in forming finished products.

The type 1 wheels fall under this category and further designated to these types called 1A1, 1A8. Moreover, 1AI and 1A8are knownfor the straight super abrasives wheels having straight face and no recess.

Selection of grinding wheels is challenging task for every manufacturer. This machine is used to produce external cylindrical surface. The surfaces may be straight, tapered, steps or profiled. Broadly there are three different types of cylindrical grinding machine as follows:

Figure 29.8 illustrates schematically this machine and various motions required for grinding action. The machine is similar to a centre lathe in many respects. The workpiece is held between head stock and tailstock centres. A disc type grinding wheel performs the grinding action with its peripheral surface. Both traverse and plunge grinding can be carried out in this machine as shown in Fig.29.9.

Universal cylindrical grinder is similar to a plain cylindrical one except that it is more versatile. In addition to small worktable swivel, this machine provides large swivel of head stock, wheel head slide and wheel head mount on the wheel head slide.

This grinding machine is a production machine in which out side diameter of the workpiece is ground. The workpiece is not held between centres but by a work support blade. It is rotated by means of a regulating wheel and ground by the grinding wheel. In through-feed centreless grinding, the regulating wheel revolving at a much lower surface speed than grinding wheel controls the rotation and longitudinal motion of the workpiece. The regulating wheel is kept slightly inclined to the axis of the grinding wheel and the workpiece is fed longitudinally as shown in Fig. 29.14.

The digestive system plays a significant role in the digestion process, which is composed of the alimentary canal and other associated glands. The alimentary canal is divided into five main parts- mouth, esophagus, stomach, small intestine, small intestine and lastly large intestine.

Mouth It includes teeth, salivary glands and tongue. It is the beginning of the digestive tract and the process of digestion begins from the mouth, where teeth help by breaking and grinding the food molecules followed by the saliva mixing with the food particles.

Esophagus This is a muscular tube, measuring 25cm long and located near the trachea connecting to the pharynx. It is the upper part of the gastrointestinal tract and is mainly involved in delivering the foodparticles from the mouth to the stomach.

Stomach It is a hollow and muscular organ, situated towards the left side of the abdominal cavity and beneath the diaphragm. It is a vital organ, which functions by storing the food, provides enough time to digest meals, produces hydrochloric acid and digestive enzymes that maintain the process of digestion.

Small Intestine It is a thin and long tube-like structure measuring about 9 to 10 feet long and also the part of the lower gastrointestinal tract.The small intestine is located just behind the stomach, which is found completely coiled and consists of folds and ridges.

Large Intestine This is a thick and long tube-like structure measuring about 4 to 5 feet in length. It is present just beneath the stomach and wraps over the superior and lateral edges of the small intestine. It functions by absorbing water and support in the breakdown of wastes to fetch small nutrients.

Liver The liver is a large, reddish-brown, triangular-shaped organ of the digestive system, which is located to the right of the stomach. It functions by processing the absorbed food from the small intestine, produces bile, which helps in the digestion of fat in the small intestine.
