UBS published its commodity-price control proposals after last weeks spectacular rise and fall in the price of iron ore which hit an all-time record high of $233 a ton on Wednesday before dropping back to $205/t.

Australia, which supplies an estimated 60% of Chinas imported iron ore has been the major beneficiary of the price rise despite an intensifying war of words and trade bans applied by China on a range of agricultural products such as barley and seafood.

A shortfall in Brazilian iron ore exports has applied extra pressure on the price which had been expected to fall this year but has surged higher, partly because Chinese steel mills have been building stockpiles of the material in case they are ordered to reduce purchases from Australia.

Another investment bank, Morgan Stanley said the catalyst for last weeks record high iron ore price was an announcement that China had suspended indefinitely all activities under the framework of the China-Australian Strategic Economic Dialogue.

China steel demand is strong and inventories are following seasonal patterns but in our view China steel prices are being pulled up by record international steel prices and export premiums, UBS said.

The bank said that in April, Chinese finished steel exports rose to the highest level since 2016, adding that high steel prices had incentivized record steel output despite restrictions in Tangshan and, in turn, strong demand for iron ore.

The bank did not name Australia in its suggestions for steel exports and reduced iron ore demand but it didnt have to because of the dominant position Australia has an iron ore supplier and the potential appeal of ratcheting up pressure on its trade target.

Due to the oolitic structure of the high phosphorus iron ore and the closely wrapping of apatite and hematite phases, an approach using jet mill was utilized to grind the ore to ultrafine 0.01 to 0.001mm, which realizes the dissociation of apatite phase and hematite phase. Then in a laboratory scale rotary furnace, high phosphorus ores of different sizes were reduced by reducing gas at sub-melting point temperatures (973 to 1173K [700 to 900C]). In the rotating inclined reactor, the ore particles reacted with the reducing gas coming from the opposite direction in a rolling and discrete state, which greatly improved the kinetic conditions. In this study, the reaction rate increases significantly with the decrease of particle size. For the ultrafine high phosphorus iron ores, the metallization ratio can reach 83.91 to 97.32 pct, but only 33.24 to 40.22pct for powders with the size of 0.13 to 0.15mm. The reduced particles maintained their original sizes, without the presence of sintering phenomenon or iron whisker. Hence, two kinds of products were easily obtained by magnetic separation: the iron product with 91.42wt pct of Fe and 0.19wt pct of P, and the gangue product with 13.77wt pct of Fe and 2.32wt pct of P.

Iron ore is found in nature in the form of rocks, mixed with other elements. By means of various industrial processes incorporating cutting-edge technology, iron ore is processed and then sold to steel companies.

We are investing in technological innovations and developing initiatives to prevent and minimize the environmental impacts that mining causes. Our aim is to set the benchmark in the sustainable management and use of natural resources.

Pellets are small balls of iron ore used in the production of steel. They are made with technology that uses the powder that is generated during the ore extraction process, once considered waste.

But, before this, the ore goes through a blast furnace that only works when air can circulate freely. For this reason, the material needs to be big enough so that there are spaces between each piece.

On top of this, the ore needs to be strong enough not to be crushed thereby obstructing the blast furnace. Thus, the production of pellets is fundamental to the steel production process.

Our mines are concentrated in Brazil, where we also operate pelletizing plants. In addition, we have a pelletizing plant in Oman and stakes in joint ventures in China that produce pellets (small lumps of iron particles).

At Sossego copper mine in Cana dos Carajs, Par, a series of actions aimed at increasing water recirculation resulted in a 99% reuse rate in 2012. This has reduced the amount of water pumped from the Parauapebas River by around 900,000 m3 per year, enough to supply a town of 25,000 people for six months.

Vales ore reuse system has so far made it possible to reprocess 5.2 million metric tonnes of ultrafine ore deposited in tailings ponds. Without this technology, this ore would have been wasted.

We operate 10,000 kilometres of railroad tracks and we use the worlds biggest ore carriers. Valemax vessels are capable of carrying 400,000 metric tonnes each 2.3 times more than traditional Capesize ships and they emit 35% less CO2 per ton of ore transported.
