CETC Solar Energy is comprised of three manufacturing sites. Combined, it covers the entire solar energy manufacturing chain, from raw silicon to complete solar electric systems. CETC Solar Energy is taking a giant step into the future with one subsidiary at its headquarter. Since 2008 CETC Solar Energy has been supporting the subsidiary Hunan Red Solar Photoelectricity Science and Technology Co., Ltd. The company is setting up industrial production for the recovery of solar silicon from silane, and it also handles the development and construction of a production plant for the manufacture of solar silicon of high purity based on metallurgical silicon.

Parallel to its own raw material activities, the concern also depends on traditional long-term partnerships with reliable external suppliers. In this manner, it has been possible for CETC Solar Energy, despite world-wide scarce capacities of silicon manufacture in the past, to ensure supplies of the raw material even in the future.

[Silicon is the main component of a solar cell and is melted from sand that is available endlessly - it is the element with the second largest quantity in the earth's crust. Mono-crystalline silicon is extracted from the earths magma. The internal crystal structure is homogenous, which can be recognized from the uniform external colour. Poly-crystalline silicon has a structure in which many crystals grow next to each other during solidification. Polycrystalline cells can be recognized from the transparent corn limits since there is a "Metal Flake Effect".]

The CETC Solar Energy subsidiary Hunan Red Solar Photoelectricity Science and Technology Co., Ltd. is one of the largest manufacturers of solar silicon wafers in China. A wide range of mono-crystalline and multi-crystalline solar wafers is manufactured at the plant to meet customer-specific requirements. Most of the wafers are further processed to make solar cells for standard products - not only within the company but also by a large number of customers nationwide. [A solar cell is the basic element used in the manufacture of solar modules. The efficiency (ratio of usable to input energy) of a solar cell made of poly-crystalline silicon under laboratory conditions lies in the range of 21.9 percent, and under actual manufacturing conditions the efficiency achieved is 17 to 19 percent. A cell made of mono-crystalline silicon attained an efficiency of about 26.7 percent under laboratory conditions and 18 to 20 percent under actual manufacturing conditions. The PERC (passivated emitter rear cell) solar cell technology is an upgrade technology for standard AL-BSF solar cells which increases efficiencies by using aluminium oxide (AIOx) passivation with a silicon nitrate capping layer to improve the transformation of solar energy into electric energy.]

The production system of an organization is that part, which produces products of an organization. It is that activity whereby resources, flowing within a defined system, are combined and transformed in a controlled manner to add value in accordance with the policies communicated by management. A simplified production system is shown above.The production system has the following characteristics:

JOB SHOP PRODUCTION Job shop production are characterized by manufacturing of one or few quantity of products designed and produced as per the specification of customers within prefixed time and cost. The distinguishing feature of this is low volume and high variety of products.

BATCH PRODUCTION Batch production is defined by American Production and Inventory Control Society (APICS) as a form of manufacturing in which the job passes through the functional departments in lots or batches and each lot may have a different routing.It is characterized by the manufacture of limited number of products produced at regular intervals and stocked awaiting sales.

MASS PRODUCTION Manufacture of discrete parts or assemblies using a continuous process are called mass production. This production system is justified by very large volume of production. The machines are arranged in a line or product layout. Product and process standardization exists and all outputs follow the same path.

CONTINUOUS PRODUCTION Production facilities are arranged as per the sequence of production operations from the first operations to the finished product. The items are made to flow through the sequence of operations through material handling devices such as conveyors, transfer devices, etc.

The production system is a part of a larger system the business firm. The production system can be viewed as a framework or skeleton of activities within which the creation of value can occur. Briefly, the difference between the value of inputs and the value of outputs represents the value created through production activities. At one end of the production system are the inputs and at the other end are outputs. Connecting the inputs and outputs are a series of operations or processes, storages and inspections. Fig. 2.1 represents a simplified production system.

The concept of production system is applicable to both production of components and production of services as well. The production of any component or service can be viewed in terms of a production system. For example, the manufacture of furniture involves such inputs as wood, glue, nails, screws, paints, sand paper, saws, workers etc. After these inputs are acquired, they must be stored until ready for use.

Then several operations, such as sawing, nailing, sanding and painting can occur through which inputs are converted into such outputs as chairs, tables, etc. After the finishing operation, a final inspection occurs. Then the outputs are held in stock rooms until they are shipped to the customers.

It is one of the basic models of the production system. A production system is the set of interconnected input-output elements and is made up of three component parts namely inputs, process and outputs (Fig. 2.3). A wide variety of inputs are transformed so that they give out a set of outputs. The transforming process can be complicated and the design of an actual input and output system for manufacturing may be expensive and difficult.

But in a system of Production Management this definition of efficiency means utter failure and ultimately the end of the business. In economic system, the efficiency has to be greater than one which means a state of profit. A production management system comprehends and integrates both engineering and economic criteria in its activities.
